There are 2 airborne divisions.

82nd Airborne: Ft. Bragg, NC. They are an active Airborne Division, on jump status.

101st Airborne, Ft. Campbell, KY. They are not an active Airborne Division, though some of the soldiers are on active status. It is more of an Air Assualt Division.

Which one is best? That really depends on who you talk to. I was never in the 82nd, so I can't answer for them. I was with the 101st and thought they were great when I was there.

There are Airborne units throughout the country and around the world. Any Ranger Battalion will be on active jump status as will every SF Group. There is an Airborne Battalion (or is it a Brigade) in Vincenza, Italy that is active. E Co 51st Inf in Germany was an active LRS unit, but I think they just left.

The 82nd Airborne Division is the only division in the US Armed Forces which is entirely on airborne status.

The 101st Airborne Division retains its name from military heritage but is not a true airborne division. It is considered an Air Assault division.

The 75th Ranger Regiment is a fully airborne regiment, however a regiment is much smaller in size than a division.

Which one is the "best"? Depends on the mission at hand.

For example: If a large number of "shock troops" are needed for a behind-enemy-lines insertion I would go with the 82nd. If an airfield needs to be seized the 75th are your men. If the objective involves jungle terrain and many helicopters, go with the 101st.

There are only two US Army Airborne Divisions, the 82nd and 101st. Only the 82nd is "a real Airborne" Division because the 101st is now actually air assault and only retains its Airborne name due to its proud and honorable legacy in World War II. The 82nd is the only division on active Airborne status.

So, to answer, the 82nd is the best, as it is the only one of its kind in the US Army.

The army only has one airborne division. The 82nd. So, its the best and worst.

I Believe the ranger regiment is tops. They are relatively small, pack a tremendous amount of firepower, are trained to take and hold airfields, ports and such and do it with about as much violence as any unit can dish out. My vote goes "Ranger all the way"!

the bad news is that the 82d is allowing non-airborne personnel in it's ranks now.
