If you really want to "fly" but are not an officer, and going the way of being an enlisted personnel, then one way to stay in the air is to become a KC-135 boom operator. This job entails you "refueling" other jets, cargo carriers and so on. Usually there are only two officer's and two enlisted who "man" the plane while in flight. The boom operator even takes over for the pilots as he "controls" the refueling as well as making sure each plane, or planes if the aircraft is a multiple refuel-er plane, is communicating on atmospheric conditions.
This would be something to look into since many other "non flying" positions are being eliminated due to budget cuts and personnel down sizing; over 49,000 by summer of 2009. So I would try hard to get into this program. On a recent "spouse incentive flight" I witnessed the refueling of 4 F-15's and the boom operator was only 19 years old?

Yes - as far as piloting, only officers can go for piloting. Any other flying is either as a passenger or as an aircrew member. Passenger flights are only if you are deploying somewhere, or if you are going to another base for training purposes. Aircrew jobs are not common and you are not flying the aircraft - rather, you would be operationg electronics of some kind, navigating, communicating, or operating a gun. Other than that, you are not flying.

Very true, theres few enlisted jobs that require flight. Cargo master, some crew positions on the AC130, thats about it really. My pops had one of the last enlisted jobs on a bomber and his job went away in 1968.
