March 1, 2007 | "What I want to know is: Why haven't these American Muslims you write about denounced terrorism?" The speaker, wearing an expression of earnest frustration, stood first in line to get a signed copy of my new book after a reading I did last week at the Los Angeles Public Library. "You say there are these moderate Muslims," he continued. "Why don't we hear from them about terrorism?"

It's a question I've heard at every bookstore, library, radio station and television studio where I've appeared around the country in the past month as I promoted my book "American Islam: The Struggle for the Soul of a Religion." The Christians have a similar problem, though a little less deadly. The tolerate these following smarmy people that steal from the gullible and elderly:

Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Joel Osteen, Billy Graham, Gene Scott, Robert Tilton, Don Stewart

It's sickening that Christians let them continue.

The asterisked portions of the cited remarks are directly on point. All too often, it is, "But..." Americans do not want to hear, "But..." -- they want to hear: "This was wrong; it will not be tolerated, and anyone claiming to be a Muslim who engages in any such activities will be anathematized and handed over to the authorities." It needs to be said loudly, repeatedly, and carried out. If and when Osama bin Laden is handed over by Muslims to the US for prosecution, people might actually believe it.
