Cats are naturally born with the ability to purr. They will purr when content, happy and fed, but they will also purr when anxious, frightened, or hurt. Young kittens will purr ever so slightly when fed, and the mother cat will purr right back. Even if the kittens can't hear it, they can feel the vibrations. I guess it basically lets us know that our cats are normal.

I find a cat's purr reassuring that they like me and are in a happy situation. The purr is also very relaxing. You might want to try soft humming and see what that does for your cat (maybe the cat will think you're the one purring!)

I tend to find it very comforting. Although the actual reasoning for it is unknown check out what I found browsing around the net:

Recent studies are saying that the measurable Hertz of a cat's purr lies between 25 and 150. Coincidentally (or not) it has been found that sound frequency in this range can stimilate bone growth and healing.

A cats purr relaxes humans and also can send you to sleep. Its supposed to be good for you. If your tense or angry and your cat starts purring it calms you as well.

I love listening to my cats purr. It helps me fall asleep at night and it tells me that my little guys love me and feel safe when they are near me.

It let's us think that the cat is VERY happy and we read all kinds of personal compliments into that, as though the cat were telling us how special we are.

Part of the charm of the felines!
