I am a contractor and up here they are called bump outs, they are primarily used to extend the wall to accomodate built ins,such as entertainment centers ,office /den bookshelves,and yes on occasion china hutches, they are most common when the built ins are added after construction or to exsisting homes that wish to have built ins that are flush with the wall.

Not sure what you mean...a conservatory? An extension? A yurt (kind of like a hexagonal extension)?
