Can anyone give me an (or their own) example of an intense workout routine? I love to do a 40-45 minute run on a treadmill which I do about 5 to 6 days a week, but I know that is not necessarily enough. Any suggestions? I'm trying to lose a little weight

Bump it up to an hour and a half but slow the pace.

Cardio is good, but your body may be getting too used to those 40-45 min. runs for 5-6 times a week. Try something new. Maybe incline the treadmill. Or you can replace 1-2 of those runs with a new cardio workout like swimming, rowing (erg trainer), elliptical. Just keep in mind that doing the same workout a every week drops the effectiveness of your rountines. Always shake it up.
Are you incorporating weight training? Maybe you can do some weight training 2 times a week and cardio 3 times a week. If you do circuit training (5-8 weight training excercises for 1 min. each (doing as many reps in that 1min.) w/ about 15-30 sec. rests in between doing 3-5 rounds) for about an hour you can definitely get an "intense workout" that's even better than the treadmill.
Do what works for you, but kudos on keeping up with running 5-6 times a week. Ask a trainer to help build a weight training program w/ you or join a circuit training class at the gym. Good luck.

Do weitghts about 2 to 3 times a week. Nothing huge, just do 10 to 12 reps per excercise and 3 sets per excersise and work your way from one excercise to two per muscle group. You won't get all bulked up but you'll gain muscle definition and tone. You might not lose as much weight with it at the start as weights dont burn as much calories, but in the long run each pound of muscle burns 3 pounds of fat per year while at rest. The trade off in the end is great. Think about it, a year of split cardio and weights gives you increased tone and you even burn 3 pounds a year by sleeping, sitting on the couch or whatever.

Also with the cardio, vary things up. Once your body gets used to the same routine, it learns and doesn't have to work as hard. Maybe spend time on a bike or eliptical.

Hi.
In my opinion cardio is overrated as a method to loose weight. Don´t get me wrong it works but you should also think about doing some weightlifting. If you add a few pounds of muscles you increase your base metabolism which in turn makes it easier for you to loose weight.
A word of caution though, be careful not to overdo the training as that will have the reverse affects of training. Maybe you should cut a little down on the cardio and do some mucslebuilding training sessions instead but you should not train more then about 5 times a week or so. Overtraining is a serious condition that is hard to notice as it creeps upon people slowly without them noticing it.
Hope this helped.

Increase the incline. It makes the workout a lot more challenging than going faster.
