Puppy food will put weight on any dog... or prescription diets like Iams A/D

but before you do that, is your dog losing weight? May not be feeling well if she is losing weight. May want to seek a vet.

She may also be a dog that is naturally slim, like huskies, afghan hounds and border collies... they are just athletic and stay skinny naturally.

Also, what some owners describe as skinny may be the ideal weight for your dog. Check w your vet so he can do a body condition score on her... skinnier dogs are more healthy, and studies have shown they live on avg 3 yrs longer than their obese friends.

You should be happy that you don't have to diet your pup :-)

I don't know about recommended by vets - you should try calling yours I'm sure he/she'd be happy to give you a recommendation. The best thing you can do is feed her multiple small meals every three or four hours. She's going to have to go to the bathroom more frequently but it's the best you can do. Obviously since she's still a puppy(you didn't say how old, I assume under 6-7 months) she should still be eating a puppy formula dog food, whichever brand. You can also get some chicken breast or hamburger and cook that up - no bones, just meat, boil it or sear it in a pan and add that warm to her dog food without draining the fat off and that coupled with puppy food and fed every few hours for the next two weeks should work wonders. The feeding of cooked beef or chicken just to boost her and give her extra fat and protein has been recommended by our vet in the past, you should talk to yours first tho and start out slow to make sure it doesn't make her sick. Don't feed too much at once, 1/4 meat to 3/4 dry dog food(you can soak it in broth to soften it, might make her want to eat more) should work for starters. Plus, all the broth will probably encourage her to drink more and keep hydrated. You can add some cooked long grain brown rice or whole grain wheat bread in small amounts if you want, tho if it was my dog I'd go straight to puppy food and meat. Good luck with your pup!

Puppy food will help it gain some weight.

How skinny is your dog? Most dogs will have a stomach that tucks up and a "waist" when seen from above so they can look really skinny. But if your dog is underweight, something is probably wrong. It could just be intestinal parasites or something more serious. If your dog doesn't gain weight, and you see other strange things about him, go see a vet.

First take your dog to a vet and rule out intestinal parasites, Heartworm disease, and bloodwork and urinalysis to rule out any type of metabolic disorders. You didn't mention how old your dog was or if it was losing weight. Some of that may not apply. If you have a pup that just is lanky and growing, it could just be the way it is growing...some dogs grow tall and then fill out. The best food is one that is of a high quality that does not have a lot of filler (corn, wheat) in it. look at the ingredients list on the back, the first ingredient should be meat. When I first rescued my dog, he was about 10lbs underweight. i mixed puppy food with the adult food and fed him several times a day. he was given fish oil capsules and peanut butter to add on calories. He is now on a combination of dfry kibble and a raw food diet. the brands of food that I used has been Nutro Natural Choice (large breed), Innova, and Nature's variety. Royal canin also makes a pretty good kibble, as well as Canidae.

Look for Nutro, or nutro max with protein. That would be the best food for your dog, especially if your dog is high energy dog. If your dog is a couch potato and still real skinny then most likely something is wrong with your dog.
Also make sure that you are feeding your dog the amount the bag says to feed.

Well it would help if you included the breed and age of the dog. :) My suggestion is to get a good quality dog food (Such as Royal Canian, Nutro, ect.) to feed. This will help your dog gain weight. However you do NOT want to get him/her gainning weight to fast as it can be very unhealthy for them! How much does your dog weight right now?

Science Diet is what the clinic that my friend works at lives by. Ask your vet if they would okay this as an alternate food source. Has your vet checked to make sure that there isn't some form of parasite at work? There is something for EVERY case.

You need to be feeding a brand of dog food that is packed with nutrients, instead of fillers. You won't find one worth feeding at the grocer's or department store.
You will find Canidae (my fave) Wellness, Innova, Natural Balance, or California Natural at most local (not chain) pet supply shops. More nutrients are actually used in their bodies, and less becomes waste (as poop)

First you need to make sure your dog does not have worms,if not, feed him Pedigree puppy lamb and rice formula. And add about half can canned food with it, not much though it will make him "poop" to much if you give him to much canned food. But I bred Rotts and I really liked the results the lamb and rice food gave. Its easier on the stomach as well. Good Luck!
