I bet my boyfriend's friend that you can't! He's been working on his abs but he drinks at least 4 or 5 cans of Miller Lite a day. He says because it's lite beer, that it won't bloat him like regular beer does. His stomach isn't flat yet and i think it's from the beer. He's been doing the crunches for almost 8 weeks and he's hardly seeing any results. Is it time for him to lay off the booze?

You are right. The answer is no for 4 reasons.

1. Alcohol has 7 calories per gram and it disrupts the Krebs cycle which slows the metabolism. It is very fattening.

2. The way to make the abs show is to lose fat. Because we cannot spot reduce, we have to lose fat all over the whole body. This is why people with defined abs have defined arms, legs, backs, and chests.

3. Nutrition is the most important part of fat loss and the beer does not help.

4. The best exercise program to lose fat is on that trains the whole body.

Here is some info on fat loss and on why spot reduction does not work.

Fat is being built up around his liver due to his beer consumption. Crunches aren't going to reduce that.

And by the way, 4-5 cans of beer (any type) is far too much beer to be drinking each day. If you would have told us he drank 4-5 cans per week that would not have concerned me. But that much beer each day?

If he his a young person and can cut back now he will be improving his health, all around. He's moving towards alcoholism as it now stands. His non-flat tummy is a warning to him to cut back his alcohol consumption NOW!

I would say that he should stop drink so much beer. Think about how the body functions. Our bodies are trained to store food energy that is not burned off. Think about the main ingredent that is in beer, carbohidrates, barley or hops. Our bodies are great at storing these for long use. Protiens are not as easily stored and are short acting type of energies. It sounds like you are consuming lots of long term energy by drinking 4-5 beer a day. Instead of trying to sit -up your fat off, try exercising it off. Doing this will create less of a reason for your body to store all the long term energy. I hope this helps.

You're right that it might make a difference. Ab work tones and defines your muscles, but if they're covered by fat you won't get any definition or flatness. Muscle workouts do NOT burn fat, and it is NOT possible to reduce fat in specific areas rather than overall. Lite beers have about 100 calories each - if he burns that in cardio, no problem, otherwise his abs can be powerful and defined but remain hidden by layers of fat.

light bear can give you a belly too. crunches only will not help to get abs unless u already have a flat stomach. i don't drink every day but i drink once a week and i still gotta work hard to keep what i got. if your "friend" drinks every day then there is no way he can get a flat tummy by doing just crunches.

I don't think he'll get abs either. I've been doing abs for years, don't drink that much everyday amd still don't have nice abs. I guess he has to do more sit-ups and eat right. Don't drink any beer or alcohal at all!!
