I braid mine, that way I don't have any knots in it when I wake up in the morning and i have some body from the braid (bonus) at the very least I put it up in a high ponytail. it works for me and my 2 daughters. mornings are much better this way.

To avoid the serious waves that come with pigtail braids at night you can:

get a cheap hair net or shower cap even, loosly braid your hair and do not put a hair tie at the end. don't rap it quite like a bun b/c then you are trying to sleep with a lump on you head. loosly drape it around the crown of you head and put on the net. You may have some slight waving depending on how thick your hair is but generally this works for me.

I put my very long hair too, in a braid when I go to sleep at night. I tried washing it, and then putting it in a braid to sleep in. I ended up with a terrible cold (and it was summer!!!!) Gives you a real easy hair style, If you like waves in your hair. Just take your hair out of the braid in the morning, comb ( with wide tooth comb, always) and go. You'll thank everybody who answered. You will love it.

I have long hair and I normally wash it, french braid it tightly but not too tightly and then in the morning, you have wavy hair when the braids come out! That's an idea or (depending on how you normally sleep, you could put it in a side braid or a very high (we're talkin' "Pebbles Flintstone" high) ponytail and it stays out of your way!

don't sleep with wet hair, it'll make you dizzy or have a headache when you wake up and it will not be good for your hair. make sure it is dry when you sleep and do not tie it with anything. leave it as it is. it needs to "breathe" too most especially when you're asleep. having long hair, i advise you to have a trim once in a while to avoid having split ends. also treat yourself to a hot oil at least once a month or every few weeks.

the best way is to put it in two pig tails & then braid them. well thats what i did when i had long hair. also you could have some one french braid your hair and sleep in that theres plenty of things you can do you just have to experiment and see what you like best!

Low pony tail pulled to one side, draped over the chest. That way it does not irritate the back of the neck. If you pin it up out of the way it will not be head/comfortable while sleeping.

I used to have pretty long hair, it still is kind of long but what i do is wrap my hair around my head. Basically you part it along the side and wrap it around untill its completely around. You can secure it with clips

You could wear your hair in a ponytail when going to sleep, or wear a hairnet.
