Of course it is normal for a first timer to hurt when streching. Your starting something new for the muscles, they haven't been streched like that. You need to give it some time. As a tip- when streching, you should feel uncomfortable, not just pain. If you're just feeling pain, that means your over streching the muscle and this could lead to a pulled muscle, and that is not fun at all.

Stretch SLOWLY. Do not bounce, and do not use any type of force to get your body to go farther than it can on it's own. Your body knows it's own limits.
For each stretch you want to hold it at least 30 seconds. Stay relaxed and remember to breathe!
It will take time, but stretching once or twice daily is going to get you there a lot faster than if you overexert yourself and end up getting hurt.

If you really pushed it, then yes.
Start out gentle and work your way up.
You shouldnt be able to get your toes to your ear the first day out...unless you have marfans syndrome, and then it would hurt for other reasons ;)

Make sure you're warmed up before you stretch. Don't push things into being uncomfortable and stretch everyday.
