You can start both at the same time if you like, or either before the other. It really depends on your long term goals. If you're just trying to slim down and tone up, remember to focuse more on doing higher reps and lower weight. Vary your reps and sets every 2-3 weeks, and work every other month or so with a higher weight and lower rep scheme, just to keep the demand on the muscle up and therefore the growth of the muscle. With cardio, don't kill yourself starting out, start with a light jog or bike ride for 15-20 minutes and go up from there depending on how you feel. Remember to do core work and to stretch as well, two often overlooked but crucial aspects to any workout. Don't expect to see results immediately, it may take anywhere from 3-6 weeks before you start to notice any exterior changes, because your body has to lay down the internal ground work first in the way of blood vessels, and cellular adaptations to the new demands you are putting on your body. Good luck

You don't have to do cardio workouts for a month before you start hitting the gym. If you want to that is totally up to you. You should do some cardio right before you work out as a warm up. Running up hills will get you in shape, plus it is a terriffic warm-up before a work out. Hope this helps.

cardio should be combined with weight training for any work-out. You can do them at the same time though. You may want to consider alternating days cardio and weight training. It is always good to do a little cardio (5-10 minutes) before weight lifting to warm up the muscles. Much better than stretching before.

As a personal trainer, I hear many peoples excuses for not coming to the gym. One is that they don't feel they are in shape enough to start. This stems from feeling a little intimidated about coming back for the first time and either not looking as good as the other members or feeling like they can't perform as well. To answer your question, no, jump in and get your feet wet. Good luck!
