No its actually common. While it is alittle embarrassing and seems like too much information, underwire bras can cause metal detectors to go off. So if a female is going through and they have no other reason to make the detector go off, then yes they will ask.

hmmm... it could definitely be an issue if the sensitivity of the detector is set really high, but not necessarily. If he said it with a straight face and he didn't touch you, I wouldn't worry about it. Those metal detectors tend to be a little tougher than those at the airports.
When I got fingerprinted for a standard screening that I do to become a teacher in Davidson Co. Tennessee, I got hit on by the guy doing the fingerprinting at the courthouse. He gave me his number and everything. I felt a little violated. Yeah, and I'm a guy too. That was way not cool, and I should have reported him...

Yep, this is pretty common because bra underwires and also metal shoe shanks set off metal detectors all of the time. The officer was not messing with you just doing his job

As you can imagine, some people try to smuggle weapons into courthouses. The underwire in a bra will also set off the metal detector. Chances are, he isn't going to require you to remove your bra, and that's why he asked.

underwire bra contains enough metal to trigger a metal detector. before he started having to search you head to foot he wanted to know if the hand scanner was going to make noise in certain areas. it would really suck if he had to have a female gaurd come down and search you when it beep while going past your chest.

An improper first question. Should have asked, "are you carrying a weapon". NO. "Are you wearing any metal item or metal lined item". Huh, Oh yeah! My Iron Maiden Form Bra!

Duhh, metal in the detector will set it off. ANY metal. Hence him asking you that. You're lucky he didn't make you take it off (in a private area of course) because he can make you if you look suspicious.

I have to honest. That question is out of line.
He should just get his female colleague to run the metal detecting wand all over you and quit the embarrassing question.
Questioning you won't help him do his job.
Not with that question, he's not getting any answers.
So what if you were carrying a weapon in your bra, he asks you that and you said, "Yes, that's my bra."
Should he then take your word for it?
It doesn't help to do his job well.
If he does it again, ask to speak to another female colleague or his supervisor.
