Yoga is much more than what you are desiring from it. It is a philosophy which believes in the reunion with the Ultimate Soul. There are different branches to Yoga but the two most prominent are Raja Yoga & Hatha Yoga. While, the first one seeks the reunion through meditation, the latter emphasises on disciplining the body to attain the ultimate goal.
Off course, Yoga can help you a lot in shedding your extra weight. For this, you will have to discipline yourself, particularly with regards to your food habits. Cut down high carb diets, cigarettes, alcohol.
Then you can do several asanas, like Paschimotannasana, SaralHastaBhujangasana, Sarvangasana, Halasana, Dhanurasana, Veerasana, Trikonasana, ArdhaMatsyendrasana etc. Do them according to the time availability. But do the asanas regularly, more specificaly in the morning.
You can also do some Pranayama (Breathing techniques), which increase the rate of metabolism of your body and helps in burning the fat more effectively. You can practice Kapalabhati and Ujjayi Pranayama. These are also helpful, as other Yogasanas, in de-stressing you mentally too.
So, start today and start reaping the benefits.
One Caution: Do not expect a very radical change from day one. Keep on practicing, you will start feeling after some time.
Wishing you all the Luck.

Yoga is not intended to help a person lose pounds. Rather it consists of stretching exercises intended to make a person more flexible. Yoga also deals with breathing and meditation.

none if thats the only thing you are changing.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter your stats, take 300-400 calories off that number and that's how much you need to lose weight.
5-8servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water a day
5-6 small meals instead of 3 big ones (breakfast is the most important - make sure to get complex carbs like whole wheat bread, oatmeal, fruit etc)
4-6 times a week cardio for 30-50min, light weight training, many reps
no junk food, no sodas, no alcohol, no white flour (cakes, cookies, white bread, pasta etc.), nothing high in sugar (ice cream)

Yoga is not directly for weight loss. It helps you in the mind-body-spirit connection of things. This makes you better balanced.
