I got a crown on my bicuspid/premolar two months ago after breaking off the back/inside cusp. It looked to me like the part that broke off was pretty small, and I did not need a root canal or anything. The crown has caused me all manner of problems (pain, cutting/scraping my tongue and lip, pressure on adjacent teeth, interfering with my singing, whistling and even slightly with my speech), and I keep wanting to just yank it out with my bare hand. Of course, I will go to a dentist, but I wonder if it's possible to just pull out the crown and not get another one, or would enough of the tooth be shaved off by now that it would damage it to leave it exposed? I have no concern about its appearance whatsoever--no one can see it anyway--so that's not an issue.

P.S. I was not in any pain after breaking the tooth and now suspect that the crown was completely unnecessary. Is this malpractice?

I did go back once and he shaved it down a little bit but in general was not interested in hearing my complaints and did not seem to believe me. I will not be going back to that dentist!

How long have you had the crown? You might still have swelling in your mouth from it being worked on that is making it feel like the fit is too tight. I've had two crowns. One took a couple weeks to settle in and the other took about a month. Plus your mouth isn't used to this particular tooth, so it's going to feel funny for awhile. Your tooth would have been shaved down to make the crown fit, so without the crown you are going to have a funny looking little tooth with little to no enamel on it, which would be highly susceptable to further chipping or breaking. Plus it would probably be very sensitive.
Bring your issues up with a dentist, he/she should let you know if you are experiencing normal problems or not and might have to refit you for a different crown.

No this is not malpractice. You went to the dentist to get a broken tooth fixed and he fixed it. WIth all of your problems you are having with this crown have you ever once called the dentist to tell him you are having problems? If you never told the dentist you were having problems he doesn't know so he can't check it out and fix it.

Go to another dentist and make due he gets it right. He most likely did it to make sure you can chew properly. A crown should not be causing all those problems. It's not malpractice but it IS a careless and uncaring dentist. Ditch him!

I would say you should have the tooth removed. it is causing you more damage that good right now. you can have a dentist remove it or you can see an oral surgeron. if you see an oral surgeron i would as if they do implants and see what your options are there. Good luck

That's only 1 reason why I never bothered with those and just had my bad teeth pulled out. The other was they cost a lot and with no dental coverage I couldn't afford it anyway.
