which do you think was the most historically successful (number wise) in killing in the name of religion? Please explain your answer.
*killings between sects can be counted (e.g. Shiites vs Sunnis or Catholics vs ...any other Christian)
*indirect killings do not count (e.g. millions of Native Americans)
*Don't forget Christianity is 400 years older than Islam.
(the point of this question isn't to offend anyone, just to point out the idiocy in either religion claiming the moral high ground)

When I say in the name of religion, I mean that was the stated goal. The Spanish Conquistadors proudly wrote about slaughting unarmed natives to please God and Muslims had similar success attacking India.

ash- I'm ignorant? The pope himself used to send people into war, not to mention the church of England.
"come out! Come out! Christians! Come at these enemy dogs who reject the things of God..."
"...the Indians were so filled with fear that they climbed on top of one anther, formed mounds, and suffocated each other. Since they were unarmed, they were attacked without danger to any Christian. The cavalry rode them down, killing and wounding, and following in pursuit...""'chase those with the fancy clothes! Don't let any escape! Spear them!""...If night had not come on, few out of the more than 40,000 Indian troups would have been left alive....It was by the grace of God, which is great." - Eyewitness particpants of Pizarro's attack on Cajamarca in present day Peru

I defy you to find a single reputable source for your farcical statement: “The Spanish Conquistadors proudly wrote about slaughting [sic] unarmed natives to please God.” You won’t because it’s a lie. Whether they actually did on some occasion kill unarmed Indians or not, they certainly never would have admitted to it in writing. As believing Christians, they (and, as they certainly knew, their monarch and Church) wanted souls converted to the one true faith; dead people can’t be converted. And as proud soldiers, they knew there was no glory in killing unarmed combatants.

Actually, I think the most successful numberwise had very little to do with religion. Lets start with a few examples:
Civil war. political reasons
World War II: political reasons (taking over countries as well as the murdering of jews--this is where the religious were murdered and not the religious murdering)
Of course, we can't forget Stalin or Genghis Kahn or any of the others. But hey, you're trying to prove a point against religion right? To say that religion is the cause of all war? That seems to be what a lot of aethists say, before they actually think or learn their history.

I agree with Laurel W...Most of these wars were due to political reasons and not because the religion told them to do so..it would really help if people would read the Holy Books(i.e., Bible and Qur'an) before making such remarks..in islam, you're not supposed to raise a finger(its a figure of speech and not literally) against another person unless it is in defence..and also, islam has not commanded us to force people to convert nor has it told us to kill those who convert to other religions from islam and any other 'honor killings' are all forbidden.it's their choice, their gain, their loss..God hasn't given us the lisence to kill, even in the name of god..and i'm 99.9% sure that it goes the same for the christians too..no offence taken, but it didn't really help either..

I don't like these kinds of questions for a very good reason.
Religion is "a way of life", not a way of killing and ending life. All religions call for peace in life, but the problem is never with religion, but with the people who follow these religions.
Look deeper into the facts and you'll see.
Peace.

If you count all the people killed in the name of Islam (terrorist attacks) they would be a fraction of what Bush causes in Iraq the estimates are over 400,000 between killed & wounded.
& guess what the dumbass said "We're on a crusade"
I'm American by the way. & I'm ashamed of that person being my president.

Christianity has surely killed much more people than islam.
Infact if you add up the numbers christians have killed about 487,000,000. people not counting the the 6 million jews in WWII amongst other things.
Muslims have killed a much less people. and have had a much cleaner history.

I'm so sick of this ****. any person who reads the Koran or the bible and understands them will not kill. you are stupid and ignorant. the type of thinking you portray is what leads to murder because you understand little and hate because of it. Christians and Muslims please joint together on this point. that these questions should only be answered to show Gods love, not to defend your faith, but to show that they are loved by an omnipotent being

Those who follow Christ's example don't kill but get slaughtered.
Romans 8v
36As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

listen dude anything can be use as an excuse to kill others. As a proud Muslim, I can assure you that Islam doesn't encourage any kind of violence and those who are using it for the sake of religion are definitely going to hell. For god shows no mercy to those who show no mercy to others.
