Why do I keep reading articals about people thinking the phycologists and phyciatrists are a joke? Basically its like they don't believe there can be problems with the human brain. Thats like saying " Welp, her blood sugar has been running 400, but I dont think she has diabetes" Or, "No, you didn't have a heart attack, it was just a muscle spazm of the heart". Or eve, " Hannable Lecter wasn't a mass murderer, he was just really hungry, and had a peculular taste for flesh. People talking about getting rid of the American Phyciatry Asso. and being raped by the phycology racket. Well you weren't seeing the right person and for that matter what were you going there for? Obviously because you were in such good mental health, right? This question isn't for everyone, obviously. All I can say is, I and my son suffer from issues, and if it wasn't for the mental health "racket" as some would say, we wouldn't be here today. So I am sorry to all I have offended, But those comments offended me too

What you are seeing on here are numerous posts by the same individual (using different user names and avatars) who is a Scientologist. Scientologists have an anti-psychiatry agenda which began when the APA (American Psychiatric Association) did not approve L. Ron Hubbard's "Dianetics" originally because there was no research that supported its efficacy. There are a few scattered posts by others who may not be Scientologists who have had negative experiences with psychiatry (as with any field, their are good and bad practitioners), but the majority of the truly objectionable posts are by one person claiming many different identities here in order to avoid repeatedly being reported for abuse. This person regularly posts ridiculous questions (about psychiatrists eating babies and claiming to have been diagnosed with multiple and contradictory illnesses or being prescribed multiple medications) in an attempt to alarm and frighten people who are genuinely seeking help and advice. This individual does this in order to discredit psychiatry in general because they have no real basis for their attacks and they post erroneous and inaccurate accounts of psychiatric practices that in fact do not exist, such as "involuntary" ECT. (ECT certainly does exist and has helped many people with treatment resistant depression, but is only used as a last resort and requires consent from the person receiving the treatment)
Scientology was originally proposed as a science, but it became a "religion" in order to avoid being subjected to rigorous research criteria that would have demonstrated its lack of foundation and merit. By claiming to be a "religion", Scientologists and its proponents were able to evade prosecution for practicing medicine without a license and thus able to escape being held accountable for the harm that their beliefs and practices have caused.
Here is an informative article written by a journalist as far back as the 1968 which exposed Scientology for what it is-a cult:
http://www.lermanet.com/scientologynews/scientology-cult-life-magazine.htm
Here is another website for your information that details the tragic consequence of their denial of mental illness in the child of one of their prominent members. While we cannot prove that adequate mental health treatment would have prevented this, it's likely that it may have, however we will never know:
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/JeremyPerkins/
One final reference for you that demonstrates more clearly how Scientology discourages its members and proponents from questioning its teachings and exploring other sources of information and help, thus revealing itself as the cult it is:
http://www.buffaloscientologyinfo.com/rich01.html
Thank you for posting this question as it is an opportunity to expose the anti-psychiatry agenda for what it is: an attempt to defend practices and beliefs which have no scientific value or basis in fact and the damage that can be wrought when misguided individuals are manipulated by a repressive and controlling organizing.
Psychiatry, as is true of every field, has incompetent practitioners and is not always successful in its endeavors, but it has a track record of rigorous scientific evaluation which enables it to learn from its mistakes and grow in efficacy. It also has methods for reprimanding, sanctioning and suspending its practitioners who are incompetent, abusive and dangerous. Would that Scientology could say the same.

Good for you honey, you're on the right track. I'm glad you posted this.
I think that people discredit the psychiatric community becaue they are closed minded, and don't believe in mental illness because doing so would maybe show them their own faults.
And mental illness has been so overly-associated with "insanity" and institutionalization. People's greatest fear may revolve around being told they are mentally ill or being institutionalized without their consent. Scary stuff!.. according to tv. Which is the greatest teacher of our century. But..
I also think that these thoughts still exist much to my astonishment in the same way that bigotry and racism exist. You'll find that some people think like their parents or siblings do on issues like racism, religion, and mental illness. Some "old school" patterns of thoughts are handed down from generation to generation. My bf is 50 years old and doesn't believe in bipolar or most mental illnesses, even though I'm studying to be a psychologist and have shown him that it exists!
Oh well. It will go on like this until we educate our children about it, just like racism and bigotry. It astounds me to hear about racial injustice as much as when someone says "bipolar" doesn't exist.
Maybe if we hang in there the next generation will be different!

Apparently the comments are coming from people who like to hear themselves talk. I suffer from major depression, PTSD, and agoraphobia. Anyone who thinks That I like feeling suicidal for no reason, that I like not being able to be around people, or that i enjoy not being able to leave my house without having anxiety attacks are crazier than I am. As for calling mental health workers being in a "racket", the same can be said about lawyers, doctors, politicians, etc., etc., etc. It's frightening that people have such strong opinions about things they know so little about.

Well put.
Of course, what really matters is if your services are beneficial to you and your son.
Unfortunately, mental illness is a whole bunch of disorders lumped together in one grouping even though they are vastly different and have different origins/causation's, as you may well know.
Some of the reference that you object to, likely have something to do with how our culture views mental health(amongst other things). We tend to value what we view as the American ideal and often times are reluctant to face the fact that we are all vulnerable.
Unfortunately, not all therapies are as effective for all "disorders". Some disorders are viewed as intractable, futile or not warranting further effort. Some .
There areas well, many "schools of thought" within this "art" and there are detractors of therapies that one does not practice.
There is some "abuse" in all endeavors ?
Keep doing what's best for you and don't empower anyone to distract You.

Plain and simple, they don't understand mental illness. It is easy to criticize something you don't understand. What they don't seem to get is that most of these illnesses are physiological and not psychological.

Seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist is, in my opinion, for dramatic and self obsessed people who love to talk about themselves and hear themselves speak. Of course there are people with real issues. For instance schizophrenics, people with REAL MENTAL ISSUES. but nowadays practically everyone is getting diagnosed with bipolar or ADD. To me it's just an excuse that people use for their behavior. They can say, "hey I'm bipolar, that's why I'm a huge b*tch!"
