It has to be the mother. Who else would call a boy their son other than the father and the mother and since the father is dead, it follows that it's the mother.
You almost got me there if you hadn't added the hint that the Father was dead!.....

This proves how gender biased people be... WHen they think of doctors they think of men. Well guess what women could also be doctors too like in that joke. So in the end the joke contradicts itself. Yes it was funny lol.
