I great website I use to book hotels is:
"Amazing Tours and Travel"
which is part of the YTB (Your Travel Biz) Travel Network.
You can book and save on flights, hotels, cars, vacation packages and more.
For booking hotels go to the fourth column at the top and select "Lodging" than scroll down to "Hot Rate Hotels". If you are looking to save money, trying booking at hotel just outside the capitol in Arlington. The price and selection of hotels is much better.
What is great about "Hot Rate Hotels" is the 110% gurantee. Here is how is works:
YTB guarantees that Save Rate Hotels* are the best prices available online. If you find a lower rate on another website for the same room, at the same hotel, on the same dates, "within 24 hours of making your booking with us", we guarantee you that we'll match it PLUS pay you 10% of the difference in price. How many websites can make that claim?
Simply complete our convenient online Request Form within 24hrs of booking your Save Rate Hotel and we will process your request.
*Save Rate Hotel rates are noted with a special or icon next to the property listing.
Note: The Best Rate Guarantee is for the Save Rate Hotel room rate only and does not include any taxes, tariffs or fees. The Best Rate Guarantee does not apply to discounted rates for senior citizens (including AARP rates), travel industry rates (e.g. IATA), corporate negotiated rates, Government/Military rates or AAA rates.
My family and I went to Washington DC last year and had a great time seeing all of the sites. We are ready to go back again.
Have a great time on your vacation and have a wonderful day.

If you are going to the National mall area check out the Hotel Harrington. It is not fancy but it is comfortable enough for the amount of time you spend there. It's close to almost everything and only two blocks from the Metro station for longer trips. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance and seemed pretty safe and well lit area at night.

Go to sidestep.com and check out hotels prices for this area around the time you are going. If you are going in the next couple of weeks keep in mind that prices flutate a lot depending on the month.
But go to this site which is pretty good at getting good deals.

There are no "good" budget hotels in D.C. Look for a Virginia or MD hotel/motel near the Metro - they will be much cheaper.
