I'm already done with my obligation, what's in store for the over 18 crowd in the next five years?

Once Iraq is done with, I doubt you'll find many young people leaning towards a career as the worlds police.

I say lets finish the job in Afghanistan like we started in 03.

Depends on who we elect in the next few years, I suppose.

I've heard a lot of military men say that the draft is a pretty terrible way to raise an army -- that volunteers know what they are getting into, and are generally much better.

Some countries, like Germany, have a compulsory public service. Young people can serve in the military, or on farms as agricultural workers, and I think there's one other category. To me, this is a really good nation-building device. People get to see what it takes to build those "industries" and they meet people from all over the country. Men and women are "drafted."

I think after Iraq is done, there will still be trouble spots all over the world, and the US military won't lack for real-life diplomacy training.

I believe that military draft requires Congressional approval, so that probably means no, not in the near future anyway.

Should World War III break into full swing from the little firecrackers it is now, then there is a real possibility. We are letting to many rogue nations get all puffy and brave, like North Korea, Iran, Syria, etc. Sure we laugh at them know, dismiss them as puny nutjobs, but I remember the same kind of guy a few years back... Hitler, I think...

If the Republicans win the white house in 2008, and/or Congress goes back to Republican control, you should prepare for the draft. The GOP is a bankrupt party that relies on constant war to justify its existence.

Is islam in a global jihad with the west? Not really, they're too busy killing each other.

Remember that big business interests are served by war, so there's no need to win anything, just keep it going.

at present the military is downsizing! there became no draft at the same time as the US became struggling with in Iraq + Afghanistan jointly. So i do no longer imagine a draft is amazingly in all probability, yet again it isn't no longer achieveable for some thing huge like WW 3.

No.

It's better to have a small army of willing volunteers rahter than a large one of people that want to gtfo. The jobs in the army now are alot more specialized because of technology and changing warfare.

Also imagine how many people would protest against this, riots even. Americans are too selfish and don't have very strong ties to the country. We think more of benefiting ourselves rather than the country, which is the opposite of many other countries. Those countries can have mandatory military service and have it work because of this.

Sadly who are we gonna draft, the druggies, the cowards, or the fatties. We donut have a get pool to choose from. Lucky for us its about technology and not numbers, so in all seriousness that why there will never be a draft because its about weapons and technology not numbers

you finished your obligation (flat out lie to begin with) and yet you are asking (seems like you want) a draft to happen?

you do realize that instead of waiting to be drafted you could have easily stayed on right? (which proves to me that you are lying in the first place)

excuse me if i didn't understand your post. but it sure does seem like you are saying people won't sign up...but you didn't re-enlist.

by the way i am from a military family.

The problem is that when you turn 18 you are forced to sign a paper that says you will go if needed.

The people of this country will never let a draft happen again.
