I am planning on travelling to Mexico to purchase some wood carvings, paintings, ceramics and various decorations for my home.

I heard that the best place to buy goods such as these was Guadalajara.

I also heard that most of the goods sold in such places like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta to the tourists are all manufactured in Guadalajara.

Does anyone know if this is true and if so, can you please tell me where some of the best deals to find such articles would be in Guadalajara i.e. shops , markets , etc.

And and any other shopping tips that I can use. Also any good hotels to stay at while there.

Tonala, just outside Guadalaja is great, San Juan Dios market in the middle of downtown Guadalajara, many places in Tlequepaque (it's easier to find high quality, but also higher prices than Tonala).
You can find all price ranges of hotels, you might want to put "The Colony Reporter" -the English weekly newspaper in Guadalajara- in your favorite search engine, and they can lead you onto many more places.

The Tonala market in Guadalajara is the best place for prices and variety - it's huge. Many things are made there but elsewhere as well. Tlaquepaque has lots of upscale stores with interesting stuff but much more expensive

The Patzcuaro (Michoacan) area is famous for it's many crafts towns specializing in carving, copper, ceramics. And then there's Oaxaca farther south for weaving and Taxco for silver.

There's a place in downtown Guadalajara that my dad took me to when I visited called Mercado Libertad most locals refer to it and is better known as San Juan de Dios. Also across the street there is La Plaza de Los Mariachis.

Tonala, near Guadalajara. It's a very small town, you will love it, you have to be there on sunday, that's the best day for shopping there because there are not just the stores but this REALLY big market on the streets!!!! And it's very cheap.

Come to Guadalajara!!!!!.

First You should try Tlaquepaque (while in there have lunch at the Abajeño best place in town) and then Tonalá. You will find what ever your looking for there. Also try Mercado de San Juan de Dios it's a huge mercado where you can find anything
