It definitely depends on what you consider affordable but for between $1500-$2000 you can probably find a studio (in a pre-war, walk-up no doorman) within 3-4 blocks of the park on the Upper West. You may want to consider looking Upper East as well between Lex and 5th (again 3-4 blocks from the park) in the 80's and 90's as you'll likely find a bigger space. You may also want to consider going in w/ a roommate on a larger place (1 bedroom, 2 bedroom) and splitting the rent. Craigslist is a good site but also check out all the sites linked off of NYTimes real estate section....

Definitely keep in mind that you're probably going to see a TON of really small, bad places when you start looking but don't give up... finally, you're best bet is to start looking about a month before you want to move as all the best places usually go within that time frame...

"By the park" and "affordable" is an oxymoron. You may want to look on the Upper East Side around 1st/York Ave, but it's a much different atmosphere than the West Side. Studio apartments are considered affordable (around $1500/month), otherwise there's always Harlem. The closer you get to the park, the higher the rents.

Try the left bank of the hudson aka jersey. Some decent towns with an easy commute are weehawken, west new york, north bergen, if you can find something near the light rail, real easy to get into the city
