You need to file before you start attending college. It takes time to process the financial aid form by the federal government and the college itself. The best time to file for the FAFSA form is as close as you get to January 1 to get the most financial aid. You could have possibly missed the financial aid deadline by waiting until almost April 1. However, I recommend filing now. It needs to be renewed each year for the upcoming year until graduation.

You should do it before you go to the college or university. It takes 4 to 6 weeks if u do it via snail mail. It takes only 2 weeks if you do it online:www.fafsa.gov will take u there. Every college or university has a financial aid disbursement date for all students. If you choose to fill out the fafsa after u get in the college or university, you will have to make payments out of your pocket to pay tuition before the financial aid takes effect. Once it does, you can get reimbursed. The web site is either www.fafsa.gov or www.fafsa.ed.gov I cannot remember which one. The toll free number is 1-800 4 fed aid. Hope this helps. You need to do it BEFORE getting accepting or going to college. FAFSA has priority filing dates, which I hope you are not going to college next year because it already passed. What this means is that you will be last in line to receive grant aid(money you don't have to pay back) however you will still be eligible for loans.

If you are going to school starting in Aug/Sep 2007 then go and fill out your FAFSA TODAY!

If you are planning to attend college starting this summer...right now. Even for the fall, right now. You might miss out on grants that you could be eligible for if you wait too long.

As soon as possible after Jan. 1 of this year. You should apply online and sign with electronic pin as it's much faster.

Also, it is more efficient to already have your taxes done, but you don't have to. They give you the possibility of estimating your income and sending in a correction later.

Before your schools deadline and after you do your taxes.
