A - If you have the Norton Security Suite from Symantec, do not install Zone Alarm, 2 software firewalls are NOT better than 1. If you have Norton Antivirus, install the Zone Alarm firewall.
B - If you have ZoneAlarm Security Suite, the one I use by the way, again, do not install Norton, 2 antivirus systems are worse than none, they interfere with each other.
C - In other words, if either system is a complete suite, which has antivirus, antispam, antispyware, firewall, e-mail protection, etc, that is what you install.
D - If you don't yet actually have the software, use AntiVir

and the Zone Alarm firewall.

It has been my experience that the more you have running on your computer the slower it is going to run. If it does not run all the time you will not have a slow down. If it does run all the time you will have a slow down. ZoneAlarm is in competition with Symantec. In all probability, Symantec and ZoneAlarm will not work well on your computer if they are both installed. Symantec screws up the competition software. I have been told this many times. I also learned the hard way. Roger http://www.rogerbondy.net

As said above if you only install Symantec AntiVirus and not the firewall, you can have zone alarm as well. They will both slow your computer down, and if you pick one, I would say AV is more important that a high powered firewall like zone alarm.
In my opinion though, either way, I would suggest AVG Free Anti Virus. (a lot of people think that they stopped the free version, but really all you had to do was get the "new" free version from the site) IMHO I feel like it runs a lot "lighter" on my systems than Symantec.

click the "download free version" button about half way down the page. Make sure you uninstall Symantec before trying to install this.

Well, it might just be futile. I know that newer versions of Symantec have a firewall included. Zonealarm is a dedicated firewall. No use in having 2 firewalls active at the same time.
Will it slow your computer down? Depends on how much guts your computer has. If you have an older system, yes it will slow it down, newer systems wont experience so much of a drain in processing power with those two programs running at the same time.

if you only install the Symantec AV, not all the suite. Than it will fine with some standard system.
But I think why you don't use Zone Alarm Pro, it bundle with AV, and AS (Anti-virus & Anti-Spyware). It's more easier than install 2 programs.

You don't say what software from symantec you are thinking of, but
If just the antivirus then it will work fine with ZA, if security suite then DO NOT install ZA as well as you will get all sorts of problems.

Yes, Installing both of these will reduce the speed of the computer no matter what ever Operating system you use.

Never install both, they will fight... you should stick with zone alarm... any security software is going to slow down your system because it is set to check applications for viruses everytime you open them. Better to be safe than sorry, but you really need to uninstall one of them.
