Two very different dogs. Both smart and highly trainable. Both need lots of exercise. Goldens are known for people orientation, very friendly, and gentle. They are easy to train because they want to please their owners. They are terrible at protection. GSDs are much better for protection if that is your goal but need a gentle but firm handler as they tend to be a more dominant and challenging breed. They are great for tasks that require extreme concentration and focus. I really like them both, but for different reasons.

Tough choice. Both are beautiful dogs. It depends on what you want it for. If you have a family and are planning on having kids I would go with the Golden.....if you want a great watch dog I would go with the German Shepard. I have never seen anyone to be afraid of a Golden though, so if you want a dog you can take in public without scaring anyone I would definitely go with the Golden. I will always have one in my home. They are the best dogs!

Both dogs would make wonderful additions to a family.
The German Shepherd is a wonderful child's pet and with it around your child is protected.
The Golden is a gentle soul but usually not a guard dog.
BOTH shed a LOT.
The German Shepherd will GUARD the silver and jewels....the Golden will show the thief where the silver and jewels are.
Which dog to bring into your home?? It will depend on your personality, desires, needs, etc.
Remember both are long lived....both have a tendency for health risks (so do your "homework") and both are meant to be with you for LIFE (their life) so choose wisely and with a heart "..until death you do part".

German Shepherd, but it really depends on what kind of temperment you are looking for. GSDs tend to have higher drive and be more focused. They also have alot more energy. They are very intelligent dogs and will find thier own way to have fun if they should become bored. (Which could mean ripped up furniture and alot of jumping around)
They are better if you have a somewhat active lifestyle and don't mind playing fetch for 5 hours. Also if you build up thier play drive from early on, you can train them with a toy rather than food. Manipulating this crazy german shepherd drive to train it has better results than training it with food.
I also think they look better than goldens. They have this sharp intelligent look. I'm also not a big fan on longer haired dogs.
But with german shepherds you need to watch out where you buy them. A good breeder will breed them for temperment rather than looks. They also need to be properly trained and socialized or you will have a very bad dog on your hands. There are also different lines of german shepherds and they all are very different.

Golden Retriever...trust me, I have two. I also have two other dogs, a Cockerspaniel and a mixed breed with German Sheppard, and they are smart and funny, but bite a lot and are very much into wrestling....

German Shepards are smart. Scary smart. They don't do well left alone all day in the yard. If you have lots of time to train and do a "job" with him, get one.
Goldens need lots of exersize. Like, an hour of hard running EVERYDAY! If you can keep up his exersize, go for it.

I know of two german shepards that had to be put down for showing aggression towards people and other animals, so if that is what you want make sure you train it well and socialize it with lots of people and animals when it is a pup.

lol thats funny! i have a shepard/retriever mix. i want to breed him cause he is silly and loyal at the same time. i would have to say golden retriever cause they're cuter and friendlier. i have heard so many stories of shepards "losing it" and being very aggressive.

For what? Just which one is better? I would say it would more depend on the individual dog then going by a whole breed.
