I tried to do a repair installation of Windows XP Pro, but after the 34 minute mark(installing devices) , it gets very slow in installation and after a few hours it only reaches the 31 minute mark for installing network. The cursor also moves painstakingly slow. When I launch the Taskmgr from cmd, it shows that winlogon.exe is using 99-100% of cpu usage. There are several svchost running, but with almost 0%. Could anyone give detailed instructions/solutions. I already removed all external hardware.
By the way if I were to perform a clean install, will data in drive D be affected. (Windows is in C)? Thanx

If you have a motherboard with a built in NIC (ethernet port), then disable it in the BIOS and try the repair again. If you have an add-in card such as PCI, remove it.

If that doesn't help, then it could be a lot of things:

- Bad or failing hard drive (run a test)
- Overheating CPU
- Windows install that's severely corrupted

Try repair from another CD

if u clean install files in D: will remain intact, files in C: also remain intact except for desktop files any Mydocument files, programs u have to reinstall in bothe drive. do not format the drive and select leave file system as it is option while installation

If the D drive is a physically separate drive it will not be touched with a new install! Of course, you can always pull the power cable on it if you have issues.

Do your clean install! Delete all partitions, create two new partitions, make one 20GB and install XP in that partition!

Be sure to back up your data files if you can!

After install, install motherboard drivers and utilities from the motherboard CD. Then all other software. Anti virus and Firewall last.
