It is called salaat, not shalat; just letting you know the correct word.

They call out for prayers so that Muslims can come to the mosque and pray.

Why is it disturbing the peace? Isn't loud cars on the road considered annoying? How about people honking the cars for NO REASON loud? For such things, I would say that it is 'disturbing the peace' but not the call for prayers.

Well. As U know that Indonesia is a Muslim country rule by the Muslim leaders. Of course, it is compulsory in Islam to perform the prayer call b4 prayer. However, Indonesian leaders also allows other religions to practise their ritual without the Muslims making any complaint. The Christians ring their bell to call for prayer. The Hindus celebrate their many rituals throughout the calendar year. The Buddhist celebrate their 7th Month prayer with loud chanting of bidding's. Don't they know that there are also people from other religion living around the vicinity ? To live in a Multi religions country, we need to be tolerant to be respected..

Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country. As most of them are Muslim, that's why the make the call for prayer, in order for people to hear it and know that the time for prayer has arrived. And it's not shalat, it's salat or salaat.

its to remind and call muslims for prayer. yes its as disturbing as a church bell ringing, a hi-fi sound from your dormmate, husband-and-wife neighbours screaming to each other, a cat meowing in the middle of the night, rain dropping on the ground, or any other sound in between the ranges of decibels a human can hear. its science, you cannot deny it..

and you're also happened to live in a muslim country...
