I am currently getting my teeth fixed and ive been told that I need jaw surgery. My surgery is coming up and having second thoughts. Has anyone been through jaw surgery? I would like to hear from someone who has had their jaw fixed. What was the experience like and is it worth going through it all? Thanks a bunch!

I had jaw surgery when I was 17, it wasn't fun, but it also wasnt painful. I went to have mine in the hospital and stayed overnight (I was really out of it from all the drugs). They do give you steriods to keep the swelling down, but there will still be some swelling in your cheeks and when it comes down your skin will probably look somewhat bruised before it fades to a black and blue color. I had my mouth wired shut for a day and then they used rubber bands on my braces to keep my jaw shut for a week (I could open it slightly to get a straw in to drink my meal, blech, and could kind of talk though I was a little hard to understand) I think I had a really bad withdrawal from the steriods cause I was feverish and really out of it for a day or 2, but I tend to react more then most people to pain meds. After 2 weeks I got the rubber bands off and could eat soft foods, it took about the whole two weeks for my face to come down to normal....I hope this doesnt scare you, the actual surgery was what I was most worried about and of course you are out pretty much for a whole day so you have no idea whats goin on. And after 2 weeks recovery you should be doing well, it's really not painful at all its just sucks not being able to eat!!

My daughter had this surgery. She didn't swell that much because her surgeon knew what he was doing. The steroids he put her on kept the swelling way down. When you have this surgery your mouth goes temporarily numb and when the feeling returns your no longer sore. She has an amazing smile and the results would blow your mind! She told me that this surgery though wasn't fun she would do it again in a heart beat because of the results. She is gorgeous!

Write me and I will share her pictures with you.

My brother had the surgery. He had a bad overbite. We called him Bucky Beaver when we were growing up.The Doctor broke his jaw , then he reset it. We went to visit him the following day & his head was 3 times its normal size. I couldn't believe it was him. He was in severe pain for many weeks til the swelling went down. Hope it works out for you. We don't call him chops anymore.
