We have been trying for three years to get my son to poop on the potty. His younger brother does great. We have tried sticker charts, grab bags, toys, trips , etc. I have placed him on the potty and sat there with him and talk about what is bothering him. I have had him at the Dr. numerous times. She tells me we should back off. But that is hard to do when he keeps pooping in his underwear. We have also tried taking away things. Nothing works! Please help. Sometimes he won't go for days and makes himself physically sick.

1st. the links bellow may be helpful... there are chat rooms too that may be of some use posted on each of the links

2nd Have him go to the store with you and make a big deal out of buying him his own special potty seat. (once accomplished)... Let him know that this special seat has great rewards for a big boy.. Encourage him to sit on seat each time before bath or at least once a day. Teach him to pee sitting down... (just a different way... not a long term must do). Once he successfully picks out a new seat... surprise him with his own toilet tissue, they make them with puppies and different colors etc. (( this should be just his )) .

3rd (( is it apparent when he has the urge?)) be sure he gets into the bathroom. Have seat ready for his use.... Teach him to pee sitting down... (just a different way... not a long term must do). Idea, is to make him feel comfortable on his new seat he picked out.
Then Celebrate each small accomplishment as he nears the event.

If he 'does not', say little to nothing or 'maybe later you can try again'. Then have him sit again... if you know he is near due time. (( like a day or two has past with no bowel movement )).

Also, having feed him something or have him drink water... a lil bit before sitting, may help encourage little successes, like he tinkles. After first tinkle on seat, give a small book as an reward. (( keep books as the only reward while sitting on seat )) Always offer a book to encourage him to sit and try.

When he finally does.. Make a big deal out of the event, OK to have an 'ice cream party' Just be sure you have it on hand for immediate reward time.

Good luck.

Please let me know if you get any useful information. My son will be 5 in October, he is potty trained he never wets himself, but he refuses to poop on the potty and i don't know what else to do. My youngest who will be 4 in August already both poops and pees with no problems, at all. But my oldest will go off in a corner and stand on his tippy toes rather than going on the toilet. Just recently, he even squatted and pooped ont he floor!!! I am at my wits end and just don't know what else to do...

Put a nappy back on him. Madonna didn't toilet train her kids, she said that they would be digusted at themselves for dirtying their pants that they taught themselves to goto the toilet.
He is old enough to wash the solids off his pants by hand in the laundry tub ,then you can wash them again in the machine. Maybe he'll learn from that but keep everyday life as normal. Return his toys.

i know this is going to sound weird but try making it a game u can put cheerios or fruit loops in the toilet and tell him to sink as many as he can and be very positive if he does it (my sis did that with one of our nephews that was older and wouldn't do it and it worked)
