The term color blindness is misleading. It would be much better to call it color vision deficiency, because this tells us what it really is.

There are different types of color blindness. But in most cases color blindness means having problems in distinguishing certain colors. Usually the biggest problems are in red and green, but this are not the only one.

With normal vision you can distinguish over 100 hues in the color spectrum. With color blindness this can reduce to around 20 different hues.

Colorblind people not only see in black and white or grayscale, but see the world just less colorful.

There is a condition in which all colors appear as neutral grays, with varying shades of light and dark, complete or total color blindness.
Some people have the sensory mechanism for two hues only (blue and yellow) of the normal 4-primary quota, and lacking that for red and green and their derivatives, without loss of luminance or shift or shortening of the spectrum. It is an X-linked trait occurring in about 1 per cent of males, but only rarely in females.

Ever wonder the green you see is the same color to everyone else? Strange to think it might not be....

I'm partially color blind, I have a tough time telling green apart from the rest of the colors, but i do see colors. Total color blindness is very very very rare, the most common type is green color blindness. If you want to find out if your child is color blind tell him to take this test www.robinsonscamera.ca/color_blindness_test.htm
If he has trouble telling you the numbers on the images, he's very likely to be color blind, if this is the case, you should get the opinion of an oculist.
