I'm very poor but very polite and etiquette. Everytime I go to a resturaunt, I see pigs. elbows on tables, talking with full mouth, people asking complete strangers (and me) for newspapers, people always complaining over the littlest things, etc... But when I go to a soup kitchen, mouths always closed, utensils held in a mannorable fashon, some times a pleasent conversation, please's, thankyou's, etc... (same with jail) what's going on here???

basically, why are the more socially unacceptable (the unfourtenant) more polite then the avarage joe (the fourtenant)? wouldn't you think it should be the other way around?

Because its easy to do wrong things than doing the right things. Doing wrong things is self serving, and doing right things always considers not only yourself but also others that may affect your actions.

Before you get offended by seeing these things, consider the following:

Manners/ etiquettes is also culture-specific. In my culture, it's not considered bad manners to put your elbows on the table or ask a stranger for a newspaper.
In some cultures, it's not even considered bad manners to pick your nose in public....

Point being: Even though some things people do can be viewed as outright disgusting or rude, they don't necessarily realize it's bad manners or intend to offend anyone.

Some of those things aren't really rude. Yes, talking with a mouth full is gross and it'll probbaly be seen that way in many areas of the world, but what's so bad about elbows on tables? In other cultures that's exactly where your elbows should be.

It all comes back to counting your blessings. Most people, myself included, sometimes forget how good they have it. I don't think you'll find a correspondence between manners and financial or social status. People with and without manners are found all across the spectrum. One question I have for you is why are you actively looking for this in society? Do you think you notice it because you might hold people who possibly have more money to a higher standard? If you have good manners and appreciate what you have, then I would not consider you poor at all. I'd consider you quite rich!

Want my opinion? The more affluent people become, the more important they become to themselves. It makes no difference to them that Miss Manners says it is impolite to talk with your mouth full, or to interrupt when someone is speaking.

And the two most offensive gaffs of all - talking on a cell phone in a public place, and smoking in a non-smoking area.

If you teach your children manners from the start its not a big deal when they are older. Don't you think it stems from the parents? Its a rude society nowadays. Hold a door open for somebody and not even a Thankyou. Usually I say your welcome anyway and embarrass them. Legends in their own minds. Just ignore them. Doesn't matter whether you are rich or poor manners cost nothing.

Good manners cost nothing. And they cannot be bought. Many people these days don't understand the value of that.
