I want to be in the middle of it all, near most attractions like Central Park and Times Square. I am on a slim budget and only staying one night, two days. Any suggestions?

the park central hotel is right in between central park and time square, and its pretty reasonable for NYC.

you want to be in the middle of it all on a slim budget? lol. well it will cost $200 minimum for a times square area hotel. when i came to check out nyc for a few days I stayed at the ramada in queens for $150. it was next to shea stadium which was cool and pretty nice. It was a real short walk to the train which took us to times square. perhaps you should consider something similar. jersey city has lots of decent hotels a short train ride from manhattan too. you will save at least $100 a nice like this and the train ride from queens was less than 20 mins.

You asked for the best. The Waldorf Astoria would be the one for many but there a lot of great places in the Big Apple.
Then you mentioned 'budget'. Which is it? Either way you'd be well advised to make early reservation and talk directly with the hotel personnel.

oh my gosh. New York City is the most amazing place in the world! everytime i have gone there I have stayed at the Hilton off of The Avenue of the Americas and 63rd street I believe. Its only a couple of blocks from rockefeller center and a block or two away from Saks on 5th avenue. Wow, i really hope you have fun while you're there. you'll never get bored.

The Hotel Chelsea.

I don't know if it is nice but it has tons of history. It is where Nancy Spungen, Sid Vicious' girlfriend, died and where many other famous musicians lived like Patti Smith, etc. Some famous writers like Ernest Hemingway, I think, lived also for a while.
