I have this cat that i've been havin for the last 3 months or so. she was an alley cat i brought her in when it was freezing in chicago. But i noticed that she doesnt meow at all. not even if there is no food in the bowl. Is that normal? my other cats practically talk to me if their food bowl is empty? she just looks at me and its such a sweetheart.

Some cats are very quiet and some are very vocal. I have a Scottish Fold cat that was 3 years old before I knew what his voice was. He is a big silver tabby with a small sissy voice. I also have a Munchkin that never even tried to meow when we lived in the Midwest and then when we moved to the west coast he must have been happy because he looked at me and said "Meh".

I am so happy to hear that you took this poor kitty in, and am especially glad to see that you even noticed that something might not be right.
However, having my cat for 8 years now, my cat to this day has never meowed - only the chirps and purring, looks so funny to see him try, but just can't seem to get it out. Many checkups and perfectly healthy with exception to a hernia - though the vet said its no problem, as long as he doesn't show signs of hurting or tenderness.
Thank you for your question, I love seeing people who DO care for their pets!

First of all, I have to tell you that I am so proud of you for taking her in, you probably saved her life. I have 10 cats, 9 were strays I took in and got fixed. I have never had a cat that didn't meow at all. I have some that meow alot and one that hardly ever meows. Are you sure she doesn't meow at all? Some of my cats have a really really soft meow. Your cat sounds so adorable.

It's not very common, but it does happen. My cat is now 8 and has just started to figure out how to meow, but she has been able to chirp and purr (very well).

It could just be that the muscles used to meow aren't as developed. If you cat is responsive to other noises, like being called, birds, ect I doubt that she is deaf. In the wild, there are very few cats that can meow (and purr). If you are concerned, see the vet, but some cats just don't like to do it!

One of my cats didn't really meow at all for about the first 1.5 - 2 years that I had him. He would only mew (rarely) when he wanted me to pick him up. So I always picked him up when he cried, and now he meows more (and louder), but still only when he wants to be cuddled, never for food or anything else.

My cat was rescued from the street like yours, and apparently it is quite common for abandoned cats not to meow. I wouldn't worry about it - when your cat is ready to communicate by meowing, she will.

We took in a cat that was half dead....weighed less than a pound. Alex didn't purr or meow. I do believe they learn these things 'in the nest', so when mom is no longer there, they have to teach themselves. ( OK quit laughing!) One time my hubby didn't know he was standing on Alex's tail.....Alex's mouth was opening and closing but nothing was coming out. When he started purring he would purr as he exhaled, take a breath, and purr again. Actually it was pretty funny. It took a while but now he purrs like crazy and definitely lets me know when his dish is empty! lol Give her time, she'll catch on.....she'll follow the other cats example.

It is not at all unusual for a cat that is your third (or fourth+) to not meow much. Basically, she is low kitty on the totem pole right now (beta-kitty). My brothers cat barely spoke for seventeen years. When the older two cats in our house passed away, she started talking up a storm!
