I am really strict and loving. I use rewards and all the tecniques from obedience classes. I use the water bottle, which he hates, for punishment. He listens pretty good to me. But my brother is harsh with him. He will be physical with him and push him off the couch really rough and my dog will turn on a dime and coming running to my brother when called. With me, he usually comes pretty good, but not like that. My dog adores my brother and me both... I use a deep authroitive voice and all that, and never let him get away with anything.. but he listens much slower and more reluctanct to me... why?

Watch the Dog Whisper dude ... he is not harsh ... his body language exudes 'alpha dog'. This type of 'training' is disputed in some areas but I have seen how it works. Dogs NEED a pack. When you are the leader harmony can exisit. Bribes and punishment don't make up for leadership and respect. When the dog is on the couch with you, you have made it (the dog) your equal (or possibly your master). If you WANT the dog with you on the couch it should be your choice (I'm guessing that is what your bother does ... ie ... that was nice but now you need to be off.

I think it's because the dog is afraid of him and because of that he listens to him. And the reason he adores your brother is because he's looking for acceptance from him, he may view your brother as the leader.
But I think there are other ways than having a dog afraid of you, you may just have a really stubborn dog. Make it more fun for him to come to you.
At least he isn't completely ignoring you!

He is figuring out the pecking order in your house, and has decided that your brother is more important. It's probably more related to the way you treat each other than it is to the way you treat the dog. If your brother uses negative reinforcement, then the dog is going to respond out of fear. Do not set this up as a competition, you will only confuse the dog. It is best if you play with him one at a time.

If your brother is physically bigger than you, it's logical for the dog to think he's in charge because that's the way it works... the big guys are in charge.

alot of times you will get a dog that is quite stubborn. For instance, labs are very smart dogs but they are stubborn when they are young. Sometimes more aggression (not cruelty) is what it takes to make these kind of dogs understand that they want to listen to that person. Im not saying to slap your dog around.. but a hard push or smack on the nose might be what it takes to make your dog understand that you are being serious with him. He will learn quickly and as time goes on you can be more laid back with him.

He is reacting out of fear for your brother, but the bond you all share is better because you don't have to be aggressive to make him do what you want. Make sure whenever you call him its for something positive, so he wont be reluctant to come to you - always have treats on hand. Think about it - when you call him he will come happily with his tail wagging, but when your brother calls he will approach like he's scared. In the long run your way is better, keep at it!

Learning how to train your dog will improve your life and hers, enhance the bond between you, and ensure her safety and it can be a lot of fun. Dogs are usually eager to learn, and the key to success is good communication. Your dog needs to understand how you’d like her to behave and why it’s in her best interest to comply with your wishes. your brother is mean and should not be crossed. you are strict but more loving.

Don't worry. You have been the best dog owner I have ever heard of, and your dog seems to be a little out of it if he likes someone like your brother

no offense.

Well
If you want to stop unwanted behaviours of your dog you need to follow a good training course. One of the best I found online is http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=572

. It really helped me a lot. I saw very quick improvements thanks to some gentle, simple and effective tecniques they teach in the course
I hope it helps
