The only thing I know about them apart from that they are a small dog, is that they don't bark. They can make noise but it comes out more as a yodel- not quite a howl. They generally won't even do this unless paired with another or several other very noisy dogs. They don't bark because of the way that their vocal chords are formed. (Breed All About It)

In addition to not having much of a voice,Basenji dogs are violent. It's in their nature. When I was a kid, our neighbor had a Basenji. It was ok with people, but terrorized the other neighborhood dogs. It even hunted & killed our neighbor's puppy. Do plenty of research on this breed before you get one. One of the other answers include's a Basenji breed page. Study it and good luck!

I think a Basenji would be a good choice, especially because these dogs hardly bark. And a hardly non barking dog is a great quality for living in apartments.
Just make sure you give him/her enough exercise since the dog won't have much room to run around in the apartment!

I don't know much about the breed, but they are highly "over-bred", which means you have to be carefull about breed specific diseases and problems like hip dysplasia.
From what I heard, these guys are fairly uncommon, there aren't that many breeders around so you'd probably have to pay and arm and a leg to get one.

An cheaper and easier to get to alternative might be a Jack Russel terrier. They are equally small and spunky and have short coats that do well in the heat. I know a few JR owners who swear by this breed.

best if luck.

Oh... and if you want a good apartment dog, I personally swaer by the mini australian shepard. My mini aussie is cute as a button, very energetic and a great apt. dog because he is deaf. (Due to very negligent breeding, he's a rescue.) Owning a deaf dog can be an intimidating idea; but they are quiet, very sound sleepers and bond strongly to thier owner. There are a lot of deaf dogs out there looking for homes and though it can be a challenge, they really are fantastic dogs.

Best of luck!

Basenjis weight 21-24 lbs, and are 16-17 inches in height. They are suitable for hot sunny climates, are usually good with children and are suitable for urban living.

they do not bark but guess what, they yodel and howl just as loud as any dog can bark so that does not mean they will be a nice quiet apartment dog. They are prone to kidney failure and are also very primitive dogs that like to hunt and fight.

If I were you I would read this book before you buy one http://www.amazon.com/Basenjis-Complete-Pet-Owners-Manual/dp/0764132644/ref=cm_lmf_tit_21/104-9972303-8419937

basenjis are the "barkless" dog. they are not mute, but shouldnt bark, the do make some noises though. they are from africa, and in swahili their name means "wild and violent." i wouldnt recommend this dog for an apartment as their activity rates are high and need alot of excercise and would do best with a big fenced yard.
