For some really good articles on cat nutrition go to: www.littlebigcat.com. There are at least fifty articles there on cat behavior, diseases and nutrition. Some to read right now on diet would be, "What Cats Should Eat", "Why Cats Need Canned Food", "Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food", "Why Fish is Dangerous for Cats". The articles are in alphabetical order so the ones mentioned are at the end.

BARF.
I hate to take the fun out of it by explaining, but I don't want anyone to think I promote feeding vomit
BARF stands for biologically appropriate raw food. This means that if you have a carnivore - which is what cats are - you should feed them meat. Preferably chunks of raw meat WITH bone. Muscle meat is what keeps the teeth clean, and I imagine gnawing on a bone helps too. The bone is necessary to provide calcium. And it's quite safe to give raw bones. It's cooked bones that will splinter.
Cooked meat isn't great because nutrients are killed off or diminished in the cooking process.
Raw ground meat, bone and organs are good too.
But if you're not up to that, choose a good canned food. Canned food is the best - dry food is only good for the convenience factor.

Natural Balance Venison & Pea from PetCo. It does not have any grains and is therefore very low carb. You should also only put the food out twice a day for 15-30 minutes (no free-ranging)
