Wow... what a question : ) I can talk about this one all day, but I won't. I'll keep it simple... 'we' need to be Patriots. America is at great risk of essentially being Balkanized as a country, and our leaders of the day are greatly responsible because of their constant imposition of new laws, lack of enforcement of perfectly good ones, and their ability to pretty exempt themselves from living as the 'common man' does. Corruption and pettiness is the order of the day in Washington it seems these days, on both sides of the aisle, and middle America doesn't respect them anymore. They sold us out to a very big degree lately by legislating over us, creating laws to help divide us, and being in an ivory tower themselves, protected from us. I do however, take a little bit of comfort in the simple fact that there are several out there that recognize where we are headed as a country, and that sooner, rather than later, I hope that collectively, Patriots emerge. Lunacy abounds, and on the world stage, we are looking like fools. IMHO, our 'leaders' (using the term loosely) on both sides of the aisle, better get to the business of the country, and stop the political correctness nonsense that is literally killing and dividing us as a people. I'm not a believer in the phrase "Diversity is our strength." I tend to gravitate much more towards be the best you can be, fight for what is worth fighting for, and support your country first and foremost as united Americans. I couldn't care less what your skin color is... just be good and do the right thing, be an American, and stand by your neighbor.
How do we get America's esteem back? Get the media on the right side, have them be loyal to the country that allows them the freedom to be the complete irresponsible jackasses they have been. Loyalty to this country should be an honorable thing, not ridiculed as most major media outlets do. Their words and images are absorbed, it seems, by people too lazy to actually look into the facts and issues for themselves. The media controls in a sense, how many view this country. Look how many stories, articles, and television news is covered... is it favorable, and pro-American, or does it seek to divide, and denigrate in its representation of the news. Is it positive or negative?
Ok, I'm off my soapbox. Can we still be friends? lol. I liked your question.

Maybe we should try to stop hating each other; I see this as a bigger problem. "Republicans are evil," "the Left hates America," "Republicans are fascist," "Leftists are Communists who should all move to Cuba." Sigh. Our civil discourse has completely broken down if this is the best we've got. It displays a willful refusal to give each other the benefit of the doubt and exercise even a shred of common courtesy. I'm so sick and tired of being told I hate America and that I'm a Communist because I'm on the left and was against the war from the beginning. How has this war been fiscally responsible? Despite all that's come out, still some people are hating on others whose caution may have been useful at the planning stage, or refuse to examine their own beliefs for areas that they might have been mistaken. All out of arrogance and refusal to admit they are wrong. Still others on my side of the camp insist on blaming Bush for every terrorist attack anywhere in the world rather than the people perpetrating them, or simply blame Israel for all of the problems of the Middle East. Too many people these days think they're SO right and the other side is SO wrong. I'm personally sick of EVERYONE's self-righteousness. think that we Americans should all learn the meaning of "humility" and try talking to each other rather than name-calling in the manner of elementary school students, or making vast, grand generalizations about the other side. We'll never "fall in love with America again" if we can't stand each other, and we certainly won't be able to fight our common enemies, and god help us then.

People who feel disenfranchised do not make good citizens. Why participate in a system that simply does not represent your viewpoint? Why love a country that gives lip service to equal opportunity, but fails to deliver it to you?
That is the situation for millions of Americans. Like the Roman plebes, they have lost interest in a state that uses them for labour but does not nurture their ambitions in return.
In Rome that situation was brought about by the partisan nature of the Senate and Consuls. The conservatives under Cato, Cicero and Bibulous were so determined to undermine Julius Caesar and his more liberal agenda that they ignored the popular good and subverted the processes of government to achieve their own elitist goals. The end result was a loss of faith by the Roman public, and dictatorship.
Today the corporatist Republicans think they can carry their narrow agenda through biased appointments, procedural tampering and character assassination. They feel the public will be content with bread and circuses, or television and ipods, and will not be engaged in the state for the near future.
Since their actual plan is to remove the interest in government for all but their own supporters, I guess the first step toward recovering our stake in America is to so thouroughly destroy the Republicans that they get the message the last election sent, but they have hitherto ignored.
This still leaves the problem of the Democrats. Somehow we have to get the message out that we moderates insist on a nonpartisan approach, and will reject any ideologue who spends all their time being against everything, rather than for something.
If the Democrats don't get it, we can trash them as well. It is time for the neoMcCarthyites and political correctoids to crawl back under their rocks and bite each other while the rest of us, civilly and with respect for each other, repair the damage they have done to our country.

That is an excellent question.
Perhaps it would be helpful to smile at everyone, and I do mean everyone, to begin with. Sometimes folks loose their smile and you can "give" them one of yours. It is a first step and by no means a final step.
Next would be so show a kindness to a minimum of one person a day. Man/woman/or child. Someone you might normally ignore and not someone you know.
When driving by a lady, with children in tow, waiting on a bus bench on a hot day....quickly drive into a convenience store and buy some bottled water and give it to them. It is a small kindness but worth the effort.
Give folks the right of way when driving...even if it is your turn.
It is the little efforts of life that surprise folks when they are the recipients.
These are small steps...but they are ohhhhh so uplifting to the receivers and the givers.
:o)

The theives have already left the house. Call the police, and watch the response time. In the meanwhile how far away have the theives gone? I am beginning to think I should be calling several Michigan based manufacturers Chinese or Mexican special interest groups. Don't ask me about self esteem, tell them about it.

An abiding sense of shame would do wonders. Problem is, we won't cop to our own shortsightedness. The beauty of America has been sabotaged by competitive maximizers who need someone to look down on in order to maintain their plasticized self image. You can say they should be ashamed and they'd probably agree with you, but they won't get off the dime.Splinter groups form rapidly when one of them deserts the ship. It's like pointing at the moon and all they see is your finger.

Um . . . a Civil War? I'm not dropping any veiled threats, but the rancor and complete lack of civility between Conservatives and Left-Wing extremists has gone beyond anything I've ever read in the escalation to the last American Civil War.
The Left HATES America. They bash America constantly, and they downplay American contributions to Western Civilization. They will never be content until the USA is a Marxist state, and that's never going to happen. Sadly, violence is looking to be inevitable (did you see the left-wing extremists burning effigies of American soldiers at the "peace protests" a few days ago?)
I'm all about diversity of political thought, but at a minimum you should support your country. The left-wing has got to go . . . I think they'd be happier in Venezuala or Cuba anyway.

Stop diverting funds from outside the United States and back domestically. Begin taking care of our own first. Ex; healthcare, homelessness, illiteracy, civic improvement, immigration reform. We can't love others until we begin loving our own again.

Impeach Bush, Cheney, etc.. Then the US will see that they are actually living in a fair and morally just country where nobody is above the law, no matter how rich or powerful.
