I am having a "Top and Tail" Endoscopy (An upper GI Endoscopy and Flexible Sigmoidoscopy at the same time) and I'm very anxious about it indeed.

I have read up about both procedures, but I'm unsure what happens when they take place at the same time. Plus I'm hoping I'll be allowed sedation, is this possible with a top and tail?

Thanks for taking the time to read.

i haven't done the sigmoidoscopy, but the endoscopy...been there done that...twice. they drug you up and knock you out. (i had two ulcers by the age of 22...WOOO!) both times i woke up confused and in little to no pain, just tired and wanting to go back to sleep!! they won't do an endoscopy without sedatives, so don't be concerned!

check out the "preparation" part of this page:

You've read up on the procedures, so no need for me to go into them. Although you'll be having both carried out on the same day, they will be done separately, to avoid cross contamination. One procedure is clean and the other dirty. They should perform the Endoscopy first, then the Sigmoidoscopy. You should be given a sedative either prior to going to operating room, or in the anaesthetic room.

The doctor should give you sedation-you will not be completely out. Sometimes they don't give sedation for just a sigmoidoscopy so you lucked out. If he gives you the right amount of sedation you won't feel a thing, if he doesn't you'll be writhing in pain. Good luck I hope your doctor is a good one. P.S. I've never heard it called a "top and tail", that's so weird!

You will receive a great drug during the procedure. They will also anesthetize your throat so you will not feel the scope at all. You will think you are awake but you won't remember anything.

It is rather unusual to have both procedures done at the same time, but if you are willing, go for it. I feel sure your physician knows what he/she is doing. You sure are going to be a bit uncomfortable for a couple of days.

I am hoping that will do one, and then the other but not both at the same time. Not good.

They instructed me to drink the whole gallon. regrettably i began out puking it lower back up in my mouth. After approximately 2 hours of this, I gave up. For my attempt, I had already fed on a great quantity of magnesium citrate earlier to the gallon jug of laxative, so i presumed i grow to be exceedingly sparkling. It particularly tastes horrid. They sedated me with some thing the nurse mentioned grow to be 10x superior than heroin. One prick and that grow to be it. you will in all probability no longer remember lots. I didnt. Dontcontinual that day or sign any criminal archives--you wont remember doing it. The endoscope will make you gag-yet you would be sedated. i did no longer ought to resign supplements, yet do exactly despite the fact that they permit you be attentive to to. So, no i did no longer drink the whole gallon, yet I had the different crap to drink additionally. It sucks, yet purely save thinking approximately how great it is going to likely be to eat once you awaken. Have somebody with you besides might-I have been given relatively dizzy the morning of the attempt (from no longer ingesting and pooing for 2 days right now) and almost surpassed out interior the washing room drying my hair. sturdy success

It is common to do both at the same time. You're there, you're prepped, the doctor is there, why not?

Relax, you'll remember being taken into the procedure room, talking to the nurse in the recovery area, and nothing in between.
You'll feel no pain or discomfort. Afterwards, you'll probably want to sleep.

Goodluck.

Don't even worry about it. They'll knock you out completely with IV sedation, you won't feel or remember a thing.
