Been married 6 1/2 yrs to bipolar woman. I love her very much but things are getting worse. Tried every med known to man and therapy. I am Christian so I keep hanging in there but when do you say enough is enough?

It can be very tough. I've been married 13 years to my husband who was diagnosed as bipolar only 18 months ago. As a Christian, you married "in sickness and in health". Would you leave if she developed breast cancer or Lupus? Of course not. Try to keep in mind although her actions maybe be very frustrating to deal with, it is because she is ill, and can't help what she does. Find another doctor if you have to, and make sure she speaks to her psychiatrist every month, or every week if she needs. That part of therapy is very important also. And if possible, every other talk session she has, try to make it a joint session so you can both talk to the doctor.

The best thing you can do for her is to help yourself. Don't give up on her but learn to cope better for yourself. Talk to your family doctor about getting help for yourself so that you can learn to cope better with her disorder and how to help her but not lose yourself. It CAN be done. Would be very sad to see you bail out because you do not have the skills to manage this...you can get the skills and find a good life through this. But you have to be willing to get the help you need for you. Especially if there are children involved. Possible this can be passed on to children and you do not want to give the impression to the children that you get abandoned with this disease. Because one day one of those kids may have it...and that would be a powerful, negative message of hopelessness to give the child. Learn to cope and save yourself through this and be support for your spouse. You will like yourself much better for it.
