My dog was run over today and I took him to the vet, who really didn't spend to much time looking him over and told me he was fine aside from a little road rash. She gave him a pain killer and some antibiotics. Once home my little buddy wouldn't lay down and I'm afraid he may have some internal damage. Or maybe he's just shook up. He's a pretty big boxer so he is really strong. Should the pain killer knock him out?

Yes, your dog is very shook up. Even if he didn't get hurt it's a terrible experience for your dog. I don't think the pain killers would knock him out, most doggy medicine doesn't do that, but I don't really know. When we gave our dog some pain killers it just made him drowsy, I guess it depends on the medicine, just like human meds. He's sore, and I'm sure he doesn't want to lay down, but if you are worried, I would call the vet's office and ask them about it. Poor dog, I hope he's OK.

DUSTY!!! I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS!!!My pup got run over by a car too, same story, nothing broke just a few scratches. Same pain killer and antibiotics. She's a staffie x bulldog. She was VERY scared, really shooked up indeed. But she was great the day after, the drugs did work. She dint get an xray either. I thought the vet would but didnt. The vet took her and just felt her lal over, put her on the floor and she was walking just fine. She said that maybe she had a little internal bleeding but was minimal so the vet said to keep an eye. Nothing happened and its all gone now.

The pain killer might not be strong enough to knock your dog out. Did the vet do xrays? I think if it were me, I would go back or to a different vet and tell them you are concerned that there could be internal damage. It certainly is a possibility that there could be internal damage. Better safe then sorry. I hope your little buddy feels lots better soon.

The pain killers will definately help the poor thing. However, if he is still acting like that in a couple of days he may have gotten internal damage. If the vet hasn't done so, have them take X-rays and do a more thorough examination. I hope he feels better soon and decided to be more careful around cars...

Did the vet do xrays? If he didnt then he needs to, because without that there is no way to tell if there is internal damage. If he did and said he was ok, then im sure he is. He probably is a little shook up, sore, combination of both. Just try to comfort him or her and let them know that they are safe.

Give him the pain killers and get a second oppinion tomorrow. If there are any serious issues I'd report the first vet to the ASPCA for an incomplete check up.

The vet must have a reason that they didn't ex-ray your dog. I'd wait a little couple days (max) and if he doesn't get a little more mobile, take him back in and get an ex-ray. My dog was run over a couple of years ago, they ex-rayed him right away because he had a visible wound, a broken leg.

I'm sorry I can't help you with your question, but I just wanted to express my sympathy. I love dogs and your story is heartwrenching. My family is actually considering getting a boxer, so I have researched a bit on the breed and love them very much. I hope your buddy gets better soon!

I would be concerned also...if she only looked him over..he could have internal injuries. Can you seek out another vet tonight or tomorrow? I sure would..Don't know about the pain killer tho.....Good Luck

He may be stressed from the incident. Give him the pain med and if he is not better tomorrow or he gets worse overnight, take him back to the vet for X-rays and further examination.
