It is to keep preditors away or for nutrition?

Some humans do, too. Rather than taking drugs after childbirth midwives used to make "pink milkshakes" from pieces of the placenta for the mother. The natural oxytocin in the placenta material helps the uterus to contract back to its normal size after childbirth.

Perhaps sheep know that naturally?

It provides essential nutrients after childbirth. Humans would too if they weren't so civilized. I heard that Tom Cruise ate Katie Holmes-Cruise's placenta after she gave birth to their baby (which doesn't really make sense...wouldn't Katie be the one to eat it? Oh well, its just what I heard).
