My dog growls, moans and rumbles when I rub his stomach or sides. He pants and growls, but doesn't show teeth. Sometimes while I'm doing this, he'll just jump up and move away. I"m not at all rough with him, but I'm not sure if he thinks we're playing and having fun with him, or if I'm being agressive and scaring him. How can I tell the difference?

He's lying on his back or side while I'm doing this.

How old is your dog? I would guess if he is not showing his teeth he is just "talking". I have a Great Dane that is a "talker" and every time I touch him he makes these moaning noises. When he just jumps up he might not like the spot your touching, due to sensitivity, or maybe he is ticklish. I think if he was being agressive you would know, he would most likely make a growl, snarl, and then bark at you.

Body language. If your dog is relaxed when you are rubbing his belly or even wagging his tail, he is happy. If he is jumping up or struggling to get away, he is probably not happy with the situation.

If the dog is relaxed (tail wagging/laying still not tense or tucked under, looking around the room, tongue out, etc) then he likes it. If he is struggleing to get away from you, looking directly at you, or squiming at all, then no, he doesn't.

if he drops his head while standing... and maybe even lowers his tail... he isn't happy. also, since you say he some times just jumps up and moves away, he may have a sore or tender spot. you may want to get him a check up.

look for his body language, ears back, teeth bared, hackles up, or is his tail relaxed tongue out and his eyes elsewhere, if he is looking at you he is not happy, if he is just looking around then he is content and being vocal
