In my opinion there are 2 kinds of Christians. The horrible ones that down everybody for anything & then my kind which is I believe but to each is own. Respect my opinion & I'll respect yours. Just like there are two kinds of atheists. The first one being the kind that will mock Gods existance every chance they get & the second being leave me alone about not believing & I won't mock your God. Which kind of atheist are you? I'm just hoping that there aren't as many of the first kind of atheists as we all know there are too many of the first kind of Christians.

I tried to be the second kind. But after about 25 years of it I realized that there was no chance they would leave me alone about it. I believe that we seriously have the need to have more atheists as political allies. I take most opportunities to mock religion now and I do see a change in the religious makeup coming. I think that mocking religion makes it easier for those that don't believe, but are afraid to say it.

I think the *Normal* Christians merely provide support and cover for the lunatic fringe. If they were not present the lunacy of the extreme believers would be obvious. By the majority believing moderate lunacy they allow major lunacy to seem like just one more small step on a scale of belief.
The moderates are worse than the full blown lunatics like Fred Phelps.
The moderates make the Benny Hinns, Ted Haggards and Pat Robertsons possible.
The Moderates are Goats in Lambs' clothing.

Normaly I believe in live and let live. But, as you have already noted, because there are too many disrespectfull christians, I often find it neccessary to respond in kind. Especially when they use an oppurtunity to answer questions to proselityse. It agrivates the piss out of me. If I want to read ads, I can find plenty of them just by turning off my pop up blocker. Im glad that you believe in letting others believe the way they choose. I wish there were more like you.

I am the second. Although I will tell you what I think when asked, I won't force you to believe what I believe, you are entitled to your opinion and I respect you for that.

I'm the live and let live type of an atheist. I'll respect your beliefs as long as you respect mine too.

In real life...the "just leave me alone" type...and I think most of us are. Although the internet is a different world and the Christian provokers turn many on to picking on them. And then the innocent ones sometimes fall into the line of fire. (Or get mad that the jerky ones get picked on, side with them and join the line of fire when they could have stayed out of it.)

I don't discuss my religious beliefs (or lack thereof) with people. To me, it's personal, and not a point of discussion or debate. I've found that's the easiest way to avoid an argument or confrontation from someone who is determined to force their views on anyone who doesn't believe the same way as they do!

I think you'll find that most of the atheists who mock your god would be happy to stop if you (not you personally) kept your religion to yourselves. That means keeping it out of schools, not indoctrinating children, not legislating on it, not using it to oppress valid scientific theories, etc.

I actually have expressed that I can tolerate believers who don't try to force their belief on me. I state my belief in atheism when I try to answer the first kind of Christians that you described.
