If which Protestants are correct?? Obviously they are not all correct since their teachings conflict from one denomination to another on virtually every possible point, and conflicting beliefs mean false beliefs. Truth cannot conflict with truth.
Also, what does 400 AD have to do with Catholicism? The Catholic Church is described, by that name, in documents as early as 107 AD. The writings of Ignatius, first Catholic bishop of Antioch, who was ordained by the Apostle John, refer to "the Holy Catholic Church".

Well, I can't speak for Protestants, but as a Catholic, I can say this:
Anyone who was not exposed to God's Divine Revelation in their lifetime, through no fault of their own, can still acheive salvation. If they honestly sought God in what ways they could, then they can be saved via "baptism of desire".
However, it is far more difficult to find one's way to God without be exposed to Revelation, that's why the Church spread God's word from almost the very beginning (Pentacost of ~AD 33).
Edit: And, those faithful Jews who followed the Old Covenant (Abraham, Jacob, etc.) also achieved salvation, but waited in Sheol until Jesus conquered death once and for all.

I can't speak for Catholics, but we Protestants don't believe that you go to heaven or hell based on what the name of your religion is. We believe that Catholics can also get into heaven, but not because their Catholics. Just like Protestants don't get into heaven just because they call themselves Protestants. The issue is having a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I believe that there are a lot of Catholics going to heaven and a lot of Protestants that won't be there.

At one time the catholic church adhered to the gospel. But just as the church's in Revelations were in trouble so did the church in Rome find its self in trouble. There was two governments in Rome. The Roman Empire and the Roman Catholic Church. These two joined forces together and when they did the church at Rome excepted the Roman false gods as saints within the church. This away the pagans could still keep their gods and be a part of the church as well. Many true Christians separated themselves from the church at Rome at that time and the Catholic church put many of them to death.Pope John Paul went so far as to apologize for it.In the Bible the original church was at Jerusalem. If I understand correctly its still there today. Its called Orthodox CHRISTIAN Church.

The old Testement was people looking forward to the coming of a Savior. All those who believed that God would send a savior were counted as Saved. Those of us born after Jesus must believe that Jesus was the Savior in order to be Saved.
Gen 15:6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.
