I dont know the answer to your historic question on rabies, however. I have something of interest to you to pass on.

I saw in SCIENCE magazine, March 2007 issue at newstands now. That a girl in Wisconsin was "cured of rabies" the first known case ever cured. Interesting article as you probably know the disease leave no visible efects or damage to the brain, yet people die from it. Turns out they put this girl in a coma for 10 days and let her imune system take care of the rabid virus and then reawakened the girl. Interesting article.
