The coughing is normal, you're clearing out your lungs, and insomnia is also normal when going through withdrawls from cigarettes. Check out this link, it should answer a lot of your questions... it helped me. I just quit last week. Congrats on making a great decision! Hang in there, it's worth it!

It takes about 14-21 days to get the nicotine out of your body. The hardest thing to break are the psychological habits. I went through a stop smoking system, and the main thrust was to eliminate the triggers" 1.Don't smoke on the phone; 2 don't smoke in the car.3. Wait various amounts of time after meals to be able to smoke. Log how and when you smoke and the amount of need you have. Don't carry cigarettes with you; etc. Nicotine isn't the main problem, it is a change in behavior, so patches and pills don't help that.

People react differently when they quit smoking. Drinking more water will help to flush out the mucus, but if you have gone 9 days with difficulty sleeping, you can go see the doctor.
If you don't want to see the doctor yet, try to:
1. eliminate caffeine at dinner
2. drink a glass of milk at bedtime
3. don't drink other liquids or exercise within 3 hours of bedtime
4. leave the TV off in the bedroom
5. put the radio on classical music for about 30 minutes

Anywhere from 3 days to 6 months. It depends on how much and how long you smoked before you actually quit. Use over-the-counter medications to sleep, and do whatever you can to not start up smoking again. BTW, congratulations, and Best Wishes!

Good job!! Maybe you are a little nervous, try some chamomile tea and melatonin to help you rest. It may take a while for your body not to crave the nicotinte, maybe some Commit may help.
