Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, also known as winter depression is an affective, or mood, disorder. Most SAD sufferers experience normal mental health throughout most of the year, but experience depressive symptoms in the winter or summer. SAD is rare, if existent at all, in the tropics, but is measurably present at latitudes north of 30°N, or south of 30°S.

"Symptoms of winter SAD usually begin in October or November and subside in March or April. Some patients begin to slump as early as August, while others remain well until January. Regardless of the time of onset, most patients don’t feel fully back to normal until early May. Depressions are usually mild to moderate, but they can be severe. Very few patients with SAD have required hospitalization, and even fewer have been treated with electroconvulsive therapy.
The usual characteristics of recurrent winter depression include oversleeping, daytime fatigue, carbohydrate craving and weight gain, although a patient does not necessarily show these symptoms. Additionally, there are the usual features of depression, especially decreased sexual interest, lethargy, hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, lack of interest in normal activities, and social withdrawal."
I see people have already answered this question, but a really great place to find accurate medical information is

Rox is right. S.A.D. stems from the decreased amount of light you receive during the winter months. Light makes most people (if not all) feel better.
Treatment (if you can't move to florida) is to get a bright light (I think they use fluourescent bulbs) and sit under it for a few hours a day and voila.

Do you suffer from panic and anxiety attacks? If so you are not alone, it is said that just over 35% of the population will suffer at some point in their life. I suffered for 10 long years, until I finally found the answers I needed to be able to cure myself. Read here https://tr.im/NaturalRemediesForAnxiety
So, yes, anxiety is treatable and no matter how many false dawns you've had so far, you don't have to just live with it

It is a disorder caused by the winter season. Because it tends to be cold and dreary during the winter we feel more depressed and less apt to go out and enjoy ourselves. Alot of people suffer from this and doctors sometimes even recommend tanning during this time to allow you to feel the warmth and enjoy the rays that you get in a tanning bed.

Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that tends to occur (and recur) as the days grow shorter in the fall and winter. It is believed that affected persons react adversely to the decreasing amounts of light and the colder temperatures as the fall and winter progress.

Okay so you got some answers. It is real, some people may not agree. But I suffer from it. I seriously get sad and depressed in the fall and winter months. Especially since I live in the Pacific Northwest and it is usually rainy and cloudy all day. I am from Arizona so I'm not used to it.
