My in-laws, my mother, and I are driving down to San Antonio to see him graduate. Does anyone have any tips for making our time there easier? And what we should expect? And what should we do during his free time. Thank you!

Good grief, you can hug him! Don't listen to that guy! The general rule for PDA from what I understand is no more than 3 seconds. So while people are around, keep your hugs and other signs of affection to a minimum.

Lackland is a pretty big base, so you will be walking around quite a bit (not sure what the rules are these days for the trainees riding in POVs but I don't think it's permitted except on Saturday). Providing he didn't do anything to have his "liberties" revoked, he should have base pass Thursday, after the retreat ceremony, Friday after the graduation ceremony, and all day Sunday. Saturday, he should be allowed to leave the base. There is not a whole lot to do on base... there is a movie theatre, a bowling alley, a couple of fast food places, the BX and the visitor's center has an arcade/snack bar area. He will probably feel obligated to try and figure out something to do, but if he doesn't have anything in mind, just let him know that you are there to see him, not necessarily to "do anything". If you have never been to SA, it is a very big tourist spot, particularly downtown (Riverwalk, The Alamo, etc). Mostly, he will want to EAT! So find some good resturants and let him chow down. I have been stationed at Lackland since '99 so I can recommend some places for you if you'd like, though I tend to avoid "touristy" spots like the Riverwalk. I do however, recommend going if you've never been. It is definately worth checking out. Sunday, he will probably want to take you guys to church (I am not religious at all, but I went throughout BMT and wanted to share that).

Make sure you wear comfortable clothes/shoes... like I said, you will be walking around a lot.... hmm, it's been nearly 9 years since I went to Basic, so I've forgotten a lot, but if you have an specific questions, feel free to email me and I will help you out the best I can.

EDIT: Ooh, bring lots of money! Haha, if you plan on going anywhere downtown, it is pretty expensive (resturants, PARKING is horrible, and souveniers and stuff). I knew I blew a lot of cash on my town pass. :)

I didn't got to Air Force basic, I'm an army man myself. However I'd imagine it's fairly similar. First don't go running to your husband, let him come to you when he is allowed. Second do go crazy on PDA, you can get him in trouble. Talk with him, he's gunna have like 1000's stories to tell. Meet his DIs and friends.

About SA. I was stationed at Fort Sam, also in San Antonio. There's alot to do there. I went to Lackland and there's lotsa airplanes on display. Visit the Alamo, it's right downtown. Go next door to the mall and walk along the riverwalk (tons of great sights) and there's clubs like Cowboy's. San Antonio also has a Sea World, a Zoo and a Six Flags. There's a big tower with a restaurant too. Get your picture taken with him near the big boots at the north star mall. Outside of San Antonio there's New Braunfels, a german american town with Shlitterbahn, the biggest waterpark in America. There's also the guadalupe river, and canyon lake. Austin is about 80mi to the north.

There's a whole lot to do in SA, it's a VERY big city.

Most of the graduate Airmen head downtown to the River Walk, Alamo, and Zoo. All are well worth seeing and enjoyable for all. You didn't mention when he was graduating, but I assume it's within the next week or two. The bluebonnets are pretty good this year and your mother and in-laws should enjoy seeing them.

I would be happy to make more specific suggestions if you let me know what types of things y'all enjoy. You can email me here, if you like.

I love that bit about not hugging or kissing him. I don't know about the other services, but you are talking about the USAF you might embarrass him a bit, just because young men tend to be that way, but that is it.

Consider yourself lucky when I was there I was there through August and boy was that hot and humid! This time of year should be much better.

I'm sure you will have a good time, lots of good suggestions. given.

I'm another person from SA, and everything everyone said is great but do Look at the WEATHER. It will be hot, and if you're not from a warm, dry climate please drink lots of water to avoid heatstroke, it happens quite a bit to outof towners and I'd hate for you to feel faint or anything!

Oooh and eat mexican food, Mi Tierra is good on the Riverwalk, and it's right next to the Murcado (sp?), a mexican market with alot of handmade crafts for cheap, you can haggle there.

make reservations in advance, get to the base early, and take lots of film. As for what you should do, I have never been to San Antonio so I don't know.

I know what I wanted when I graduated from boot camp, I think you know what I mean. (No offense)

DO NOT HUG HIM.

this is called PDA - public display of affection. He could get in trouble over that. Just shake his hand.

And for godsake dont kiss the man.
