I had to change the battery in my 1994 Volvo 850, and now the radio won't play because it needs the "code" to reset it. However, the owner's manuals are long-gne, and I don't know what the code is. I'm afraid that if I go to the dealer, they will charge me an arm and a leg. Can anyone tell me how to re-set the radio without the code?

well no theres no other way to reset it without the code ths is a anti theft function but you are in luck i got your answer, allright buddy check it out this is what your going to do: you can go to a volvo delalership or you can call them either way we dont charge to get customers radio codes, see the two long tabs you have on each side of your radio, one by the volume knob and one by the number "6" preset station push thoose tabs in and they should spring out now grab both tabs and pull out and the whole radio comes out now on top of that radio find the serial number and write it down now right the last six number of your vin and call up volvo and give them the numbers when they ask you for them, they can usaually do it with just the last six of the vin but if your radio was ever replace at one point in time with another volvo radio, the radio code they have in file will be the incorrect code so thats why you get the serial number on top of the radio when you pull it out, after they give you the 4 digit code just type in that code when instucted to on your radio display with the radio preset number 1-6,now if you tried to put a code in more that 3 times the radio will lock you out and then you will have to reset your radio by leaveing your key in the number 1 postion for at least one and a half hours till the radio display reads "code", and thats it!you will not have any problems if you follow these instuctions,so good luck let me know if theres anymore assistance you might need

If you don't have the code your only choice is the dealer. Some dealers will reset it as a courtesy but you should then make sure you know what your individual code is and how to operate the security functions on your radio.

The dealer is not allowed to charge to find a radio code. You could always e-mail head office (warranty dept.) give them your VIN and registration # and they will give you the code. Or you can put a new stereo in your car.
