Absolutely, there is more to using the bomb than you may aware of. It is believed that once the US successfully developed the bomb, there was no doubt we were going to use it.

One rationale is that using the bomb would help bring a quick end to the war with japan and save thousands of American lives.

Additionally as the US came closer to attacking the Japanese homeland, we wanted the Soviet Union to help us attack Japan from the East. At the same time Russia was also trying to develop the A-bomb.

Because of this, some argue that the US wanted to send a message to the Soviets that we had the bomb and weren't afraid to use it.

I agree that it was effective, because it helped establish the US as the ultimate global superpower. So yes it was effective, and probably did save thousands of lives.

Of course some will argue that by this point in the war, Japan was on the verge of defeat, and using the bomb was unnecessary.

Some say that the Japanese were trying to negotiate a surrender, but the US wanted to drop the bombs as a warning to the USSR.

Others say that the Japanese would not have surrendered if not for the atomic bombs due to their fanatical sense of preferring death to surrendering. But the fallacy in this argument lies in the fact that they did surrender. After all, what's the difference between dying from an atomic explosion versus dying from conventional weapons? Remember, more people died in the Tokyo fire bombings than those who died in the atomic attacks.

it was a double sided tool used by the US government. Yes, it was used to bully the Japanese into surrendering to allied forces, but it was also used as a tool of intimidation. a tool used to show the rest of the world (mainly Russia) how powerful the US was. even though we were allied with Russia in WWII, we still saw them as a threat. like teaming up with someone you don't like to take down a common foe. so the answer to your question is yes. the Atomic bombs were very effective in ending the second world war, but were also key in the start of the cold war with Russia.

Unfortunately, yes it was effective. However, it only sparked another war... the Cold War. Ever since, the world has become terrified of nuclear threats and on several occassions the world has witnessed some close calls (Cuban Missile Crisis, Korean nuclear missile tests, Iran nuclear buildup, etc.). How many more close calls will there be before the actual one occurs?

Yeah, it was effective. It was a tough decision, but the war ended days after the second bomb was dropped.
