I am 32 years old and just starting my career. There are many specialized areas within my field of work and I am trying to figure out what area in that field I'd like to put my focus. Some pay more than others and I am considering a lower paying position because it would be something I would enjoy doing for a very long time. The boyfriend thinks I'm selfish in doing so because according to him, it doesn't support our long term goals and it isn't looking in the best interest of our relationship. Am I wrong to think that I should be doing something I enjoy, no matter the compensation? Am I wrong to think he should support me no matter what my career interests are? I am very angry and frustrated. Any insight?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks to both of you. You both hit similar points and we had a very long discussion last night that turned out pretty well.

if your boyfriend is more interested in how much you make than in your happiness i would wonder if that is the right boyfriend. if you being happy isn't in the best relationship then it almost seems like he's using you for the money you would make. talk to him more/deeper about this. does he really think it's selfish for you to want to be happy? does he want to be happy? what makes him happy? you may have values differences you need to explore.

You should absolutely go after what you would enjoy more, and if he is not agreeable to that, then I would have to wonder just who's side he is on.

He should be willing to adjust the 'plans' he has for the two of you to include what it is you like to do, if that means a lower income, then make the adjustments to make it work. It is supposed to be a partnership, the 2 of you, and it sounds like the other partner is starting to show his true colors.
